The domestic release date is 3/9 so may have to get from another source.

Shame on them. But they did offer something which I did bite on the VINYL issue. I saw the 1000 copies thing and for $16 each thought why not.

BTW i've listened to nothing but "songs of darkness" for the last 6 days. The last track is the odd one, it's very 'Sonic Youth'-Dirty in it's guitar sound. The whole album seems ever so slightly more mainstream than previous MDB or maybe im completely immersed and have lost my perspective and it just too well composed/polished . It's brilliant though.

Speaking of vinyl
Even though I have not had vinyl playback since 1995, I was very tempted last summer to get some picture vinyl at The End just because they look so cool and price not much more than CD......... especially stuff like COF "Darkness and her embrace" "Vempire" etc.

Picture vinyl is cool!

It's been longer than that for me. But when contemplating adding analog to my system and looking in vinyl sections of store, it was real deja-vu from my ancient days holding these huge pictures/covers again.

Try the album by Avrigus - The Secret Kingdom

The sound quailty is about as Audiophile as doom gets and the music is great! You can find it at Amazon.

http://www.doom-metal.com/ has just posted a review for 'Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light' by My Dying Bride, the normal CD can now be had at Amazon as well. So if you want to read a review by a ultra hardcore Doom Metal fan, then go check it out!

As the first notes of 'The Wreckage Of My Flesh' hit your eardrums it becomes clear that this album has an emphasis on dark atmosphere, perhaps even more so than any other My Dying Bride album. This feeling lasts throughout the album, on which obscure riffs, low, heavy keys and ominous spoken word parts determine the colour of the sound, which is near pitch black. Especially Aaron’s 'storytelling' is an important asset of this album, giving some of the songs an epic, tangible quality. It’s almost as if you're there at times. In these respects, the band has finally been able to transcend the previous albums.

I've been on a prog/psych rock/metal kick lately. Things I've enjoyed within the past week:

BORIS Akuma No Uta, (At Last) Feedbacker, Flood, Heavy Rocks -- What can I say? Boris is quickly encroaching upon my "coolest bands ever" list. This is a three-person trio from Japan (including a badass tiny female guitarist) that perform some of the heaviest heavy crap known to man. Boris' music is so heavy it'll make you feel like you just ate two pounds of Taco Bell. It's so heavy that I wouldn't recommend swimming after you listen ... because you might drown. Stylistic comparisons can be drawn to their forefathers, specifically Earth, and similar guitar-drone bands like Sunn O))) and Khanate. But where I find these pure-drone bands usually rather boring, Boris is something else altogether. There's definite elements of good ol' rockin stoner metal (Heavy Rocks is pure kick-ass stoner rock/metal) and Flood is a seventy-minute piece that sounds like Steve Reich composing for a metal band. They also have collaborations with Merzbow and Keiji Haino of Fu****susha.

GUAPO Five Suns -- now THIS is prog rock. Layered, complex, intense, cinematic. Building crescendos of drums, guitar, and keyboard. Fascinating and engaging. Way heavier than your dad's Yes and Genesis records.

SKULLFLOWER Exquisite ******** Boredom -- wow, hypnotic. Churning guitar riffs under oceans of feedback. Not for everyone, but it hits the spot sometimes.

Drone-Metal is really Drone Doom which is sub-genre of Doom-Metal, so you might enjoy that as well.

Funeral Doom

We use the term Funeral Doom to describe the most extreme split off of Death/Doom. These bands have taken the slowness and heaviness of Doom-metal to new extremes. Generally, the bands create very distorted and depressive yet dreamy music. Grunts or some totally distored version of that are also frequently used. These are the extremists when it comes to slowness and heaviness. The term comes forth from the way the music sounds as if it would fit a funeral or funeral proccession (often moving at the pace of a funeral march).
Exmples: Skepticism, Shape of Despair, Thergothon, Funeral.

Drone Doom

It is questionable if this type of music is actually still music is the purest sense of the word. Pushing all the boundries of heaviness and slowness (far beyond anything done by Funeral Doom) creating "droning sounds" that are perhaps best described as the force of extreme gravity become music or the movement of tectonic plates deep in the earth's crust. Definatly no melody, but still Black Sabbath influenced. Often relying heavily on feedback and sometimes lacking vocals or even a rythem section.
Examples: Earth, SUNN 0))), Khanate.

You should check out the band "Esoteric". You should like them.

Esoteric

Maybe the ultimate doom metal band creating a very powerful atmosphere filled with apathy, insanity, hate and disgust for the human race. Ultra slow music, very long tracks, a devastating, apocalyptic sound with samples and highly distorted vocals.

Discography: 1993: 'Esoteric emotions: the death of ignorance' (Demo) None
1994: 'Epistemological Despondency' (CD) Aesthetic Death
1997: 'The Pernicious Enigma' (CD) Aesthetic Death
1999: 'Metamorphogenesis' (CD) Eibon Records

Misc. info: Because the tracks can range anywhere from +\- 3 minutes to +\- 27 minutes, two of their released albums became double CDs (due to the extremely long running time).

Lots of 'Songs of Darkness, Words of Light' reviews out there. Some love it, lots of like it, some dislike-hate it. This one seems more accurate-closest to my opinion. But I always fear for the future of a band when someone uses the phrase "break into the mainstream"! But I can't imagine MDB doing a Katatonia-like transformation, Ugghh.
