I forgot about that In Flames shaped disk. I gotta find me one of those. I may start collecting shaped disks, at least music ones anyway.
My AC/DC shaped disk, I did make a copy of. My old computer has a nice slow drive and I set it up to go as slow as it would go. I am going to do that with this Dimmu disk also.

No, they just make sure that the center of balance is still in the center.

This is true of my AC/DC disc. But this skull disc is not even close to being centered or balanced. Let me see if I can find a good picture.

I think you can tell where the hole is right there between the eyes. The chin is quite a bit smaller than the forehead (duh) and thus heavier on the forehead side.

Yeah, but that one isn't truly shaped, it's just a shape on an otherwise transparent, round, well-distributed disk. There are actual shaped CD's, but they're hard to play in anything that doesn't have a spindle. I think some may have spokes that center the area as well as the mass, so that they can be placed in conventional drawers, but they still have problems with players that "suck" the CD in through an opening. It has trouble "seeing" that the disk is there. (My beloved Kenwood RD-VH7 has this problem.)

Why it took so long before I finally picked up a CD from Elend? Just picked up Winds Devouring Men, and I'm shocked. This is the sound I have been looking from classical for years, even though this is more on the side of dark wave / dark ambient / industrial genres. I can't think of any metal album which would have had such an emotional (melancholic and disturbing) effect on me, as Winds Devouring Men had. In addition the recording will be my reference in the future. Those massive dynamics almost blew my speakers up, heh.

Too bad that the earlier records aren't on the same level, but I suppose I have to get them all anyway.

ps. I also late-discovered Anathema a few weeks ago. I should avoid finding out about great bands that have tons of releases, or I have to find a second job

I also found previous ELEND albums not worth keeping, so I will pass on new effort.

As far as ANATHEMA, I think thier newest album is about the best they have done.

Winds Devouring Men is dramatically different from the previous Elend albums. I would rate them only 3/5 or something, but the latest album is a definite 5/5. The growling vocals are gone and vocals rely heavily on clean male vocals, which are far more neo-folkish than operatic. While the compositions were quite laid back and monotonous in 90's work, WDM has massive dynamics, more percussions and sound more like classical like Sibelius and Tchaikovsky, rather than opera (like the older albums). Of course classical composers didn't use as much disortion and vocals, heh. Prophecy Website has one sample song from WDM, which unfortunately is one of the most laid back songs from the album. If you can hear tracks "Away From Barren Stars" or "Vision Is All That Matters", you can get a better idea of WDM. The self titled track is also one of the most disturbing instrumentals I have ever heard.

Speaking of groups that have bad previous albums, then out of nowhere strike gold:

MY RUIN - Horror of Beauty

I bought both previous albums used for a couple bucks, sounded like bad Limp Biscuit wannabes, dumped them quickly. With a couple band member changes and new sound........WOW! Sounds like stoner version of Nashville *****, kicks major bu-tocks, check that chick on the drum kit (video).........will reveal more when full CD arrives.

PD...........this is what you must get!!!!!

Check this new MY RUIN video, it really kicks!

Watch out for Swallow the Sun. Will be released next friday in Finland, and already has got expectionally raving reviews all around the metal media. I'm for sure going to get their debut on friday, and post my initial impressions here with a delay of few months

. The genre is "doomy death metal", which means melodic mid-tempo metal with variety of vocals. I have even heard comparisions to Opeth, huh.
