With speakers you'll notice better controlled bass. You can use sand, maple, granite, concrete, MDF, etc. Some people choose to mass load on the top of the speaker as well. Most high end companies are now using granite boards underneath their speakers, as well as their components.

With components such as CD players people say that dampening and isolation can modify the quality of the bass as well, although I can't notice a difference myself
