That one maybe better then what I have, my 0404 is the internal PCI version.

Mine is the internal PCI version too, and I haven't used it's analog out for like.. a year now, cos it died unceremoniously lol.

I haven't read about the 0404USB, but I assume it doesn't have an amp built in that you can plug headphones into, so it's performance will depend entirely on what amp you use with it. Especially on hungry headphones like HD650 or K701 etc which starve with a weak amp.

The 0404 USB has a headphone amp.

I would like to but I am not in the habit of wasting money on things that are not a given. If it is a proven fact then I would but I think my next purchase should maybe be a better headphone amp.

sorry for a very basic question: is the Entech Number Cruncher 205.2 digital-to-analog converter a USB DAC. I don't think it is but wanted to check. Is there an adapter to convert to USB?

no and yes

I was actually in class when I posted that,

Anyway, it just depends on how much you are willing to spend on this. I think high end ones probably come in at below $100, although you can find cheaper ones than that. I honestly do not know what the best price/performance ratio is but I too am interested in a decent dac for a small amount of money so id like to hear some replies as well.

I think the Turtle Beach Micro has a digital out and costs only around $20. I want to see if I can get my broken AV710 to output in optical even if the analog is broken. If you have a desktop I think an AV710 would probably be your best option though for digital out, and it has a pretty well regarded analog line out.

The Entech Number Cruncher 203.2/205.2 is an optical only DAC. It has both a TOSLINK out and COAX in.

To clearify, the Entech has both Toslink and Coax Digital in, it does not have USB connectivity.
