Would an external DAC improve the sound of a STB or satellite receiver?

I think you would notice an improvement over the standard analog outputs.

I've had some customers do this for headphone setups connected to their STB. However some of my customers have experienced problems with some DTV channels because the digital output is Dolby Digital/AC3/DTS and a lot of DACs mentioned on this forum usually can't process these signals because of licensing issues.

HT receivers have no problems decoding it though.

Is there another solution besides buying a HT receiver?

Not too sure, but something like the Creative DDTS-100 may work.
