Hi,

Searching for a new compact headphone amp/dac combo, I've found this new device from Yulong :

https://www.shenzhenaudio.com/yulong-daart-canary-ess9018k2m-xmos-dsd-dac-jfet-input-class-a-headphone-amplifier.html

It is relatively small and has a pretty powerful class a headphone amp built using discrete components, the specs are as follows :

USB input: supports DoP64, DoP128, Native DSD64/128/256, PCM 16-32bit, 32-384KHz
Coaxial and Toslink input: supports PCM 16-24bit,44.1-384KHz
S/N ratio: -128dB
Dynamic range: 120dB
Distortion: 0.0004%
Frequency response: 20-30KHz -0.15dB
Crosstalk:-120dB
Headphone output: 100mW @ 600 Ohm, 200mW @ 300 Ohm, 400mW @ 150Ohm, 1000mW @ 32 Ohm
Dimension: 19cm*13cm*5cm
Weight: 0.7kg

This seems to compete directly with units like the Aune X1S, I've found a thread in a chinese forum :

that at least seems to say (google translate) that it pairs very well with Akg K70x and HD800, but not so well with warmer headphones (HD600, Beyer T1 MK2). Opinions on the DAC part are pretty confuse, since the translation from chinese isn't very clear.

Price is about 258$ depending on the finish (add 20$ for red color), so my question is, has anybody been able to listen to it and compare it to similar gear?, at least on paper it seems pretty good.

Regards.

So far initial quality impressions. The device is well made and solid. The finish is nice and finger print resistant. It comes with the rubber feet pre-attached, which many dont. The switches for input selection and power on/off are a nice smooth actuation and take some pressure so they cant just be changed by bumping the device. The volume knob is solid and turns easily and has a metal etching on it for the grip. The device comes with a decent USB cable, power cable, quality assurance tag, and the dac/amp itself. My only complaint and its personal at that, is that the top of device curved for seemingly no reason. But so far so good. Quality is top notch as I have experienced with other Yulong Audio products.

Interesting, would like to see comparisons vs Audio-gd NFB11.28 as well.
NFB-11.28 is slightly more expensive, but it uses the newer desktop grade 9028pro chip instead + higher output power. Aesthetics and build quality wise goes to Yulong though :p

I dont have one of these. Not sure if one of the other Yulong reviewers has one. I will reach out to them and see if they will send me a review sample though.

Absolutely loving my Yulong Canary. Awesome value for money. Much much better than the budget DAC/Amp combos people are recommending these days...aside from the NFB-11, haven't tried those yet. With my Sennheiser HD650, AKG K712PRO, Audio Technica ATH-PRO500MK2, Beyerdynamic DT990 I'm most surprised with the effect it had on my PRO500MK2. The Pro5 bass is extremely punchy and is too much for me and the high is slightly sibilant, mids slightly recessed and overall it felt veiled. Those problems are no longer there. The canary tames the bass but still keeps it tight, makes the highs roll off reminiscent of my HD650 and the mids are vastly improved. Veil is thinner this as far as i can hear them. I can enjoy my Pro500mk2 now, it's much more enjoyable and easier to listen to.
