D7000 instead of D5000 - Worth the cost?

Thanks for the input guys, but you guys are mostly refering to the response graphics, I am talking more about the 500hz square wave one. That is the one that really troubles me.

In the long run D7000 is a better choice. You have to pay for the premium and beside sound quality which everyone here all agree that is better you also get:

- A top of the line of one brand. You couldn't go any further on Denon -> in the long run your wallet will be appreciated your investment.

- You have a better looking phone and the text is not as easily to be wore off -> higher resale value.

- You have a very nice box -> You save money for a headphone case.

- You have a peace of mind since you already have the best one. You won't have to think "What if..." "Should I..." "I should have..."... -> Your health is better and when you work you will be more productivity.

See D7000 is worth it yet?

Yes, and no.

Those are very good points, but frankly I couldn't care less about having the "top of the line" of a brand if it doesn't peform.

Hell even the D2000 is better on paper... I might be more worried I made the wrong, more expensive choice because of those square wave tests :P.

But I guess the majority can't be too wrong. And Necrolic is a few years younger than me and still thinks they are better, so that makes me feel more confident.

I wouldn't worry, after a few blatantly incorrect graphs I just started completely ignoring them, I don't even look at them when looking at headphones now.

Forget about graphs. Trust your ears and enjoy the music.

So judging by this graph, you would choose the Bose over the Sennheiser?

The Monster Jams are clearly the better headphone in this case:

You can't judge much by graphs. Listen to your ears.

Well slap my ass and call me Betty, I was so busy focusing on the reference, or past reference headphones that I never bothered to check what cheap headphones were like... wow.

Haha that definitely shed some light on the topic.

Good work

Haha anytime, man. Yeah, graphs are useful but they shouldn't be the deciding factor in your choice. I totally prefer opinions over graphs.

If there's one thing I've learned after working in industry rather than reading books all day, is that a perfect calculation will more than likely be imperfect in a real application.

markl D2000s versus non-markl 5000/7000?

First things first, the D2000 an D5000 have been confirmed to share the exact same driver. The sonic difference is said to be attributed to the larger and wooden housing vs the smaller plastic one. (some say the cable, but there is significantly less grounds to believe so) That is because the housing effects how frequencies bounce around inside.

Theoretically you can get a pair of D2000 to sound like a pair of D5000, or markl D5000, but you pay a ton of money for it, for rapidly diminishing returns.

It is cheaper to buy a D5000 than it would be to buy wood cups and recable the D2000 btw.

Also, just throw on some dynamat and do the original mod yourself, and its pretty much the exact same thing as the LA5000.

I have not heard any of them, but I have read extensively.

Can I ask what amp and tubes you were using?

I should be able to give you a brief impression of my half markL modded D2000's with a non-markL modded D7000 tonight.

It was a 6H30 triode with a constant current source anode load, and it was coupled through a Sowter parallel feed output transformer. It had a bit too much gain because I could only use the first part of the volume control. It was not a commercial amp and was on loan to me from a friend of a friend.

I think the closest commercial amp would be something like the kit-built inductor-loaded Hagtech Castanet, which is also a 6H30 with parallel feed output. (I think the Sowter transformers would be a good upgrade for that amp).
