What's on your list of better cans in that price range?

HD 580, 600, k601, K501, k500, k401, k400, DT 880, Grados. Those are not "mine" list. Most of mentioned cans are better than D2000 by any means.
Also, for under $300 you can have used HD 650, K701, W1000, top MB Quarts among others...

I remember you asking about how to mod your D2000 yesterday and trying to sell them shortly thereafter. What exactly did you do to them to make you buy a new pair?

grado sr-125/225 (lulz)

or m-audio q40, AT ad900, senn hd595, beyer dt880 (like $180 or something on amazon), allen & heath has a pair of cans around $150 that use 53mm drivers (never heard em, but they're supposed to be good)

used, you might be able to find senn hd580/600, hd595's, beyer dt880's, denon d2k's, and perhaps W1000's or Sony mdr-f1's

It is a little strange that you haven't mentioned what happened. What exactly is broken?

AKG-K271S is actually better than D2000 in many respects and cost just about $150 or little less.

Yup, sad story.

Shizdan, your problem is exactly like what had happened here. Just find all the missing pieces, buy a nut driver, and screw the nut back on. The phones aren't exactly broken from what I see in the pictures. The threaded plastic piece doesn't seem to be severely bent or cracked, which is all that's important when connecting them back together. And I don't see anything else that could've been broken. The drivers are protected by metal grills and you said they sounded fine.

Too bad you've already sold them, though... for $40, too. That's a steal.

Edit:

I took a closer look at this picture (comparison), and it seems the filter paper is gone from the center of the driver. I'm not sure how falling down the stairs could have caused this, but this problem can also be easily fixed by covering it back with similar material.

Do they match the unique bass sound of the D2000s? The D2000s, in my opinion, are one of the few headphones I've heard that can do bass that way. Is it necessarily accurate? No, but if you like it, it can be hard to replace. Its not like the D2000s are liked for no good reason.

And OP, you broke them.

Haha, well at least you know you like them. I wouldn't worry too much about burn-in, as now you'll be able to see how they change over time, which can actually be fun.
