Firstly, ill set the scene.

I currently own Sennheiser HD202, HD 280 pro and Beyerdynamic DT990

I amp them all from a matrix M:stage and HRT Music Streamer II usb dac.

My portable solution is my galaxy nexus (no portable amp yet).

Im looking for something that sounds incredible, like my DT990s, with firm bass for Trance, House and RnB.
It needs to be closed and able to be amped by a non-expensive portable amp (recommendations for amp?) - something unfortunately my DT990s cant do being open and 600ohm.

I had my eyes set on D2000's, but have no problems stretching another $250 AU if the D5000 are worth it.

Thoughts?

Buy all the headphone you can afford.

Not my philosophy. I prefer to get 90% of the flagship at half or less the cost and own several pair of headphones. I owned the d2k, then "upgraded" to the d5k. I just couldn't justify the price difference and went back to the d2k.

The d5k will have a little tighter bass and slightly forward mids with pretty wooden cups. Wasn't worth it to me...

Heya,

I prefer the D5000 over the D2000 without hesitation. The D5000 has better mids and warmer bass. Same sparkle in the treble. Well worth it in my opinion. It's luxury from top to bottom too.

Very best,

I'm really digging the D5000's.  I was on the fence as to which to buy (D2000 vs. D5000) as well.  I opted for the 5000's and I couldn't be happier.  They've been outstanding with every genre so far and are a nice alternative to my AKG's.  It helped that I was able to score a really good deal on a new pair vs. open-box or used.

If you can get the D5000s for under $400, which is fairly common, it's a no brainer. At full retail, $699, I wouldn't touch the D5ks. There are several better headphones for that much cash, including the epic HE-500s.

If your budget is tight, get the D2000 for just over $200 from J & R, EE and possibly others---possibly through Amazon.

Roughly doubling that amount will get you the D5000 from (mostly) the same vendors.  This will get you significant improvements in the mids, bass and sound stage and slightly clearer highs.  Going to the D5000 is well worth considering, unless you're just biding time (and there may not be much if the entire line is to be discontinued--as reflected in some reports on these boards) until picking up the D7000 at $550 +/-.

Don't be afraid to go with "open box like new" in either case.

I wish i could get it at the same price as you Americans!

unfortunately, the cheapest down here in AUS i can get (with AUS warranty) is $540 for the D2000, and $770 for the D5000.

$719 - but i heard these are really power hungry, and i don't know what their bass levels are like.

What other quality cans compete at those price points in Oz?

The Denons are made in China and HQed in Japan.  You'd think they could better for you guys.  You're a hell of lot closer than Cali--much less New York.

As much as it hurts, the price spread difference (in percentage) is narrower between the two cans than it is here in the States.

The 940's are only $298, are they in the same league?
