That's horrible luck. If there is any warranty, try to claim it (or return them, if possible).

Maybe it's a sign from above not to use headphones. Maybe if you do, you will get electrocuted via your eardrum.
It's kind of like on the show "Deadliest Catch"... This greenhorn threatened he was going to jump off the boat unless they returned him to port. Well, seemed he made the right choice because as soon as they went back out, a rogue wave hit the boat and flipped it on its side.
(an obscure original post warrants an obscure response).
Stay away from headphones, lucky!

Ok here is an idea...
A troubleshooting 101 suggestion if you will. Are you absolutely certain that the headphones are the problem? Have you taken a pair of the headphones you suspect to be bad and plugged them into a different source (IE: another MP3 player, or some other audio device with a headphone jack) that you know for certain works properly?
I figure that most people are clever enough to try this, but I know some people may not give it any thought and just automatically assume that the headphones are bad, when the source is actually the problem. I figured it was worth a shot to mention it. My theory is that your MP3 players headphone jack may be on it's way out.
If it turns out that all of these phones are dying to your touch, then you are more than likely cursed - and the odds of you being welcome at a Head-Fi meet will probably be 'slim to none'.
The only way to lift the curse is to make (and drink) the following concoction:
2 gallons of Tyll's used bath water.
1 ground up Grado Flat pad.
1 dash of Sennheiser Veil.
1 Opamp of your choice (the higher quality the better).
Burn one of Nikongod's notorious headphone molesting pictures and sprinkle in the ashes.
1mm of Nordost speaker wire.
1 drop of Jude's blood.
Bring to a boil and stir for 5 minutes. Once this concoction is cool, drink it while naked in the middle of Times Square, and spinning in place counterclockwise when the sun is at high noon. After you are finished drinking the concoction, shout the following phrase 3 times in a row while hopping on one foot:
"I will never use iBUDS again!"
"I will never use iBUDS again!"
"I will never use iBUDS again!"
That should lift the curse. If it doesn't, then we will move to phase two of the curse removal.
Conversely, you could just buy a decent pair of KOSS headphones (KSC-75s, Portapro, Sportapro), and then take adventage of their lifetime 'no questions asked' repair/replacement policy when you inevitably break them.
Best of luck.

So most of these things are dying without you plugging them into anything? One could reasonably suspect an electrically rogue player...but not at that distance.
According to legend, my girlfriend's mom once blew out all sorts of light fixtures (street light included) because of the electrically mismatched metals in her fillings...which begs the question: how are your teeth?

To the OP: The nice folks at Koss don't care what happened, just ship the remains back. Good luck with the KSC-75's.
To the poster with the sister and the UR40's: Same deal. $6 and they send you a fixed one.

Speaking of faulty sources. I had an old JoS player, the headphone out started to become loose, result was one channel died unless I put some pressure in a specific direction on it. Worth checking out, unless you've already done that.
Is it always ONE side going dead or did both go out in any case? I don't know how much output power the zv:m has, maybe a spike could have killed the phones if there's something wrong with it. But perhaps most phones should be able to handle that... just taking guesses at what the problem might be.

Well, your computer seems to be working fine (otherwise you wouldn't be able to post on here), so it shouldn't be some supernatural phenomenon that involves failure of all electronic components within an x feet radius around you.
