Hi fellow Head Fi DIY enthusiasts,

Not knowing much of DVD players and understanding they are a different animal under the hood than your relatively straight forward CD player, what is the criteria for selecting a good base used "Universal" or SACD/DVD unit for DIY modifications ? The budget range is 500- 1000US.

I realize that's a rather large question in the scheme of things but I would hope the learned members here can help me avoid a costly mistake or dead end if possible.

What I want to get out of this DIY project is a 2 (or 5.1) channel DVDA/SACD CD player that will punch way above it's stock trim weight class once rebuilt.

Thanks guys for any ideas, models to consider etc...

Peete.

If it was me, I would see what the what gear the professional modders are working on. I would assume that they have tried different makes of universal players, and would be pushing the ones that respond best to mods.

Look at sites like tweakaudio, referenceaudiomods, etc
