Cowon BBE, BBE+ good sound quality. Is it a Myth?

I had the D2+ and my Clip + beats it thoroughly in SQ. I could never get the D2+ to live up to my expectations and found all the "sound enhancements" overrated. A Sansa Fuze or Clip on flat eq is pretty hard to beat.

SQ of Sansa is natural, good bass, very cheap price, but sound stage is very narrow, lack of detail, it's very tired if you listen within long time. Rockbox can make SQ of Sansa is a litte better but don't expect much about this.

So I read your post and looked over at my Senn HD 202 and Cowon j3 and decided to test out what you did and see if there was a difference. I plugged the headphones into my computer and used jetaudio to play a song and it sounded quite ugly in comparison to my j3. I know you bought the clip already I just wanted you to know that the wolfson chip does make a big difference.

I don't get it, it  depends of your sound card, and the bbe effects from software , are considered inferior to the bbe from hardware.
Why  you don't use the jeteffects from  your j3 instead.

I've been comparing my Cowon X7 to my iPod 5.5g with Rockbox and noticed considerably more hiss through the Cowon. I'm using Westone 4 IEMs. Anyone else notice increased hiss through Cowon players with BBE and other settings turned on? The hiss is almost non-existent through the iPod.

Check that your music doesn't have background noise. Try with modern tracks.

I have, it's not the tracks. There's definitely hiss on the Cowon and not the iPod. It's not horrible but it's there.

Cowon i9 with any eq enhancement enabled, hiss can easily be heard even with the 96db panasonic hje120.
Anything apart from the 5band eq(which is very very good) from jeteffect3.0 makes the already mediocre sound even worse.

Hiss is noticeable at very high volume (30-40), I never listen to my music so loud, using EQ only add some hiss compared to "Normal" setting. BBE was meant first to improve the listening of low bitrate mp3 music.

For low bitrates, it's the setting "mp enhance" only. No BBE is intended to mitigate the weakness of the headphone you currently use for me.

I don't care, since I'm not expecting BBE effects to change the sound signature of my IEMs so they all sound the same

and I only use EQ for lows.

It does seem to stem from the BBE/sound enhancements.

When sets on "Normal", there's no hiss, when using any effects or EQ at least, I can hear some with 16 to 64 Ohm earphones at loud volume.
