Correspondence with Ray Samuels

Ray is a busy man...aren't we all.

I assume that you've already read  threads that compare the Hornet to P-51 and others. If not, do some searching. I don't know of any good threads to point you to but they are here. Good luck.

I understand that he's busy, we all are.  But since he had the time to respond, another sentence or two actually addressing my questions would have meant the difference between a sale and a disgruntled post on the internet.

I've read reviews comparing the two but it's also nice to hear it from the horse's mouth, not to mention that no review has ever addressed the volume question I posed about the P-51.

That's what irked me about our e-mail exchange.  So many people have raved about not only his products but his willingness to help music enthusiasts.  Even from photos of him at events he appears to be a nice guy.  I'm just a little turned off when someone doesn't answer a direct question in a direct way - it's just not acceptable in my line of work.

It's a shame that he's alienated me because I was seriously thinking about purchasing one of his products.

We'll see what happens...

I feel your frustration, he does make some nice amps that's for sure.

I hope I'm not the only person who thinks it's really in poor taste to reveal contents of personal correspondence like this...if you're unhappy with Ray's response, just go buy someone else's amp.

I've talked to ray twice on the phone and while I could tell he was in a hurry, ( the man makes and sells tons of gear) he answered all of my questions and was polite the whole time. Until i personally get to know someone, I am quick and short with my responses too, it makes a lot of people think Im a jerk.

I agree.

One should also note that Ray is an audio salesman.

Uncle Erik, slightly off-topic, but I wondered if you are still enjoying the Zana Deux after (if memory serves) roughly 12 months of ownership ? Many here seem to churn through amps, particularly tube amps and the various tube/op-amp combos, but I seem to recall that you were very happy to be off the merry-go-round

I don't have a personal vendetta against Ray, I just don't take well to poor customer service, and I was not happy with the response I received from him which I made pretty clear in my last email to him and have to receive a response from.

If Ray responded with a thoughtful and informative email and I subsequently posted that to provide information to fellow Head-Fi'ers would you have the same response? I've owned a fair amount of gear in my Head-Fi career and have always received informative emails from any vendor I've contacted, this correspondence was clearly odd.

I do not think my post was in any way in poor taste. Nothing personal in nature was disclosed and unless otherwise stated there is no assumed privacy with regard to correspondence between a customer and a vendor.

And I've owned a lot of computers in my (25+ year) computing career, written code for a living, built/sold/repaired same but that doesn't get me a direct line to Steve Jobs whenever I want to ask why he didn't see fit to include USB ports on the iPad.

Boutique audio isn't the same beast as corporate computing, but its a long time since Jobs and Woz sat in a garage putting Macs together : when they did, I doubt that they took too many phone calls. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has called iBasso and asked to talk to the guy who was responsible for putting their D4 together.

I would give Ray a call. Also, when I read that you posted your correspondence, my first inclination was not to read the thread as email are personal mail and unless something that would effect life in a major way, are not something I feel should be posted.

Again, I would call Ray and discuss it with him. He really does like to help people but he is also extremely busy. I have called him at times and could tell that he was working on something at the same time. Now try and work on something and type at the same time, can't do that, but talking, yes, at least for me. Best of listening with whatever you purchase.
