Continental Dual Mono Tube Rolling Thread

mmmm........my love affair the with the CDM with the Sonotone single triodes continues (pleasant, organic, polite, smooth, balanced sound). It is perfect for all my iems. No heat issue at all  and battery life can keep up with my AK 240 (up to 8 hours or more).

The same for me.  I (very slightly) prefer them over the Mullards with both the Campfire Audio Lyra and the Fostex TH900.  But I don't use the CDM with the Fostex much because I have the Studio 6 at home.  But using KaiserTone App > iPad CCK > CDM > Lyra, I prefer the Sonotone.  And while I agree with the polite and smooth, it is definitely not at the expense of resolution or punch.  Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy (my personal subwoofer test track) has all the slam I expect through the CDM > Lyra.   Robbie Robertson's native american music CDs also shine in this setup.

The Mullards are as good as to be expected but with my hardware, I prefer the Sonotone.

I do find both of them to be fairly close, the biggest difference to me is in the bass. I personally prefer the Mullards so far

I agree on the bass difference.  I suspect I like the Sonotone because both the Lyra and the Fostex both have a strong bass response.  I have had the Mullards in for about two weeks this time and now I am going to go back to the Sonotone for a while. The other difference I find, is that the Mullard has a bit more weight or presence overall.  Just a bit.  That likely derives from the more solid bass.  And I find the Sonotone has just a little more space between instruments.

Great. I've been checking headfonia daily since you first mentioned you'd be doing a tube rolling article... Good to know when to expect it now.

Damn, I was waiting to hear more about the Mullards before spending the money on them. Oh well, guess that's that.

mmmm.........fastest fingers first. lol! But, if you haven't already, get the Sonotone. They are at par with the Mullards in terms of SQ with minute differences. Having heard both the Mullard and Sonotones, I can confidently say that they are must-haves for the CDM. I haven't enjoyed my K3003i as much as I am enjoying them now with the Sonotone/CDM and the Sony ZX2 (via AK PEF 16 interconnect), while playing Audiophile Voices albums. Woof! I prefer the K3003i right now over my Layla/AK240/CDM. Only thing better (much) is when I connected the  K3003i  to the Mezzo Soprano AK 100 + Chord TT + GSX MK2 DACT amp combo. Weak in the knees and utterly unforgettable.

I finished the tube rolling article but I'm afraid I'll have to post the CDM article in two pieces as it's just too long for 1 article. That means the tube rolling details will be online next week only. This week's article will be on the CDM and the HUGO
