What is clock jitter ? How important is jitter in different application and frequency ? Do you know what is PLL ? Do you know how clock work in CDP and sound card ? Ask your friend again about who is in stone ages.

A PLL controls a VCO and if you have ever slaved a soundcard to a DAC and measured the jitter vs. a slaved CDP you would see that the CDP has less jitter by a large margin. In the case of the slaved souncard the PLL is used to lock the card to the incoming clock.

If you have even the most basic knowledge of digital circuitry, all you have to do is look at the filtering used to power a soundcard's timing. Soundcards have more jitter on the digital outputs than even the most entry level CDP's.

Yes I still use a computer as a transport, but understand the limitations and am willing to live with the compromise.
