My computers been acting a little strange lately, the startup is notably slower than it used to be, and it just started acting this way about a week ago. I have Norton and Spybot running at all times, and run TrendMicros free web scan from time to time, so if there is anything going on it must have ducked these three. Tried running through the list of open processes in windows, everything seemed okay. If someone wouldn't mind doing a quick check on this hijackthis dump I would really appreciate it. I'm not sure how to read all that. Perhaps go to start -> run -> type 'msconfig' -> 'startup'
and see what's listed there. I don't know what in the first list starts with the computer and what you have opened since. It looks like you've got a lot of crap starting up/running, though.
These jump out at me as being useless and taking up resources:
musicmatch crap (mmtask.exe, mm_tray.exe)
realsched (realplayer)
ituneshelper
qttask (quicktime)
mysoftware newsflash (i dont know what that is, but you certainly dont need it)
hewlett-packard camera stuff
ipodservice
msn messenger

If you get rid of those, it might speed things up a bit.

I use procexp to monitor what's running and force any extra crap to close.

Hmmm, Norton Internet Security - and you really wonder why your computer is so slow?

No really, NIS is one of those cpu hogs we always turn off before any benchmark.

But, to be true, when I read through all those background applications you're running on your machine, I'm really surprised that it's got any cpu cycles left for useful tasks at all... No offence meant, though - it's not your fault. It's just what comes with modern hard- & software in order to increase comfort - but that comes at a cost and that is speed and stability. So I'd also recommend to run msconfig and clean up a little, according to your needs. That procedure is non-lossy, btw: What's listed in msconfig, can be switched on and off - so if you turn off some component and (after reboot) some software you want to use whines about it, you just go back to msconfig, reactivate what's needed and reboot again. So that clean-up doesn't actually delete anything. If you're unsure what all those automatically started .exe files do, just google 'em up. There are quite a few sites in the meantime with good info on all these apps. It may take you an evening to do this, but it'll really be worth it...

I usually run kaspersky + adaware + chkdsk. Works most the time. I had norton, it wasn't too bad, but you can do better. Yeah, and get rid of any background apps or anyones you don't use. You don't hav AIM do ya? Whenever I dled it, it spammed my PC and made it crap slow.

I try posting this is the right forum. hacker forum or virus forum. Generally the viruses that I run into make themselves very known. Could try running another type of internet explorer. I have firefox that I use at home. Even if I get a virus that takes down IE, I can still use firefox. Plus firefox is less likely to get infected from bad sites.

See what processes are taking up the most CPU. One that are bad generally have a pattern of going up and down without you doing anything on your computer.

These two with Norton AV (assuming you have the latest virus definitions on all 3) should get rid of any viruses you might have.

Good recommendations. Go through the list of running processes and Google the names of any .exe's that you are unsure of.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I'd like to try Kaspersky once the Norton subscription runs out. The computer runs quick enough once everything is loaded but startup takes a good 45 seconds, when it used to be like 5-10. It's an older 2.26GHz I put together and tweaked out back when I liked dabbling with computers. Probably could use a reformat but it's so much work to reinstall everything.

Thanks, I tried that and didn't notice anything suspicious except for winlogon.exe, which is a necessary process but evidently some trojans hijack it, but it looks like its only on one process under system32 so it should be okay.
