Do you guys have Commercial songs that you are embarrassed to like

I like

Mariah Carey - Vision of Love
Kiss - I was made for loving you
A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran
Micheal Jackson - Beat it (this ones a master piece might not have intended commercialism)
The Beatles - I wanna hold your hand (their later work is pure art)
Cameo - Word Up
Europe - Final Countdown

No offence if you think the artists didn't intend commercial success

take on me, 99 red balloons, final countdown... etc
although i have to say that a lot of it is enjoyable because some great writers are employed in the pop industry.

Yesterday I made a great brassy synth patch, which I called "Jump", but then I had to try and play the Final Countdown riff with it. Small world, I guess.

Anyways, I like all kinds of commercial music and I'm not really embarrassed by any of it (except some hip-hop lyrics really make me cringe and won't get played with any family around).

Is "commercial" synonymous with "pop"? I'm not embarrassed of any music I like; some other people might be embarrassed for me though.

Do you mean songs that are played in commercials? Many of those weren't specifically written for commerce - an ad agency approached the artist later and paid for the rights.

I'm OK with that. I've followed New Wave/Alternative/Indie Pop since, well, the New Wave, so quite a few songs I love have turned up promoting something.

Music written strictly for commercial purposes is a different animal. Some jingles are catchy, but I've never wanted to own a CD of them.

I think he was just referring to mainstream, radio-friendly music (poppy songs). A few of my favorites off the top of my head:

Our Lady Peace - Clumsy
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Radiohead - Creep
RHCP - Otherside

I'm a little embarrassed about Beyonce's Irreplaceable, and the spanish version too.

Also Demi Lovato's Don't Forget, the entire album.

Understanding that you are referring to mainstream, pop music I would honestly say the answer is yes. However, I think you don't have to narrow the question to "commercial" music. How about "Do you guys have any songs that you are embarrassed to like?"

Anyhow, some artists whose songs I like, but would be embarrassed to cue them up for friends include:

- The Carpenters -- so clean and goody, goody, but Karen's voice is amazing and many of their songs have beautiful melodies
- John Denver -- similar to the above (except John's voice isn't nearly as good). Also, the whole Rocky Mountains vibe I just like.
- The Bee Gees -- not their Disco era stuff; specifically I like Trafalgar. Not all that embarrassed by it, just one or two songs on that album really qualify.
- Shakira -- Whenever, Wherever -- It's just really catchy. And those hips...

Yeah, nothing wrong with a great pop song, no embarrassment here.

Rihanna comes to mind - I like almost everything she has put out, including the remixes (fun on a good sound system).
