Colorfly C200

Ok. Only other thing I can think of is that bin file might have got corrupted for some reason while copying from your mac into the SD card. Compare the size of the *.bin file in you computer and the one in the SD card.

Thanks for the reply.
The file seems fine. At least it looks to me, especially having tried multiple times.

Hope to hear from Colorfly soon. Also the firmware date is a bit confusing on their website. It says Upgrade version from 02.09.2016. But they labelled the file 20160714 which happens to be the date shown on the info page on my unit. But I'm pretty sure the fixes listed aren't there yet on my unit.

Now I think my unit maybe already has the latest firmware, I guess, which would be a bit disappointing. There is still pop and gap when playing albums as one file with .cue. Especially a bit of a big deal cos the beginning and end of songs also got cut off each for about a second.

Bought it for USD$200 so can't complain too much. I hope they are planning a firmware release soon to iron out the rest of the bugs.

Thanks for info, I wouldn't mind gap too much but cut offs I won't stand, so I'm still waiting for some fm improvements before purchasing C200. I hope those will come.

Judging by the lack of posts on this thread I think not many people are interested in the C200. And having checked out what DAPs look like these days, I'm not surprise. It certainly looks distinctly second rate on hand compare to the AKs, Pioneer/Onkyo, iBasso etc., in terms of design and especially build quality.  Moreover, you can get a used AK Jr or iBasso 50 for about the same or less than a new C200. Although I haven't try out the others so I can't say how the sound compares.

Nonetheless I was able to get my hands on my old C3. I hooked both up to the C&C BH (Line-out from the C200).

The C3 compares surprising well in terms of soundstage and separation between instruments. The C200 sounds more detailed and warm. I also think it extend a bit further in terms of imaging.  Everything seems fuller and weightier.

I used Final Audio's IEM Heaven IV and I think the treble sounds a bit too bright from the C200. .Having said that, vinyl rip in 24bit of Lorde's Pure Heroine sounds really organic. The HDtrack release of Leonard Cohen's You Want it Darker sounds very dimensional. I do think it could be a bit piercing when using sensitive IEMs.

This is just a quick impression comparing C200 with the C3. To be honest I doubt anyone who hasn't own a Colorfly before would bother with it. Although I don't regret about the purchase because it cost about half compare to the Onkyo (would be my choice now judging from reviews and having the budget for it). It would be good value if not for the buggy/unfinished firmware.

I'm really interested to hear if anyone has tried comparing the C200's sound with other DAPs...

I was mulling over several options for a new toy recently and I actually quite like the look of this, seems quite cheap in UK atm, £150 ish, in the end I went for AGPtek H1 which whilst quite a bit cheaper sounds amazing to my ears, superior to the Colorfly C3 IMO.

how much of an upgrade is the C200 Sq compared to C3 do you think ? although you've said it fares fairly well, I like a lot about the C3 but I sometimes found it came across a little 'thin' sounding, even amped.

I do think it is certainly 'thicker' sounding, quite noticeably actually, with the same set-up. Also listening to orchestral recordings the C200 just sounds much more like being in a music hall near the front row seats. Instruments have more texture. The C3 in comparison sounds more 'digital' and somehow 2-dimensional in comparison.  I think the C200 has more extend both at the treble and bass ends. That gives it a fuller sound. Although I said C3 has good soundstage when listening to classical music the C200 extend further/deeper away from you. So I think the C3 has good width but C200 has quite a bit more depth.

To use flowery words, the C200 is more emotional and engaging. It is more detailed and 'realistic', pardon my struggle with the English language. :)

But I don't own high end gear and have never even try them. I use the Meridian Explorer 1 out of a Mac at home. I have Senns HD518, Shure 215 SE. So I can't say I'm the best judge of audio gear. I would say the C200 compares well with the Explorer. I probably prefer the sound from the C200 just a bit more.

So I think it is a bit of a step up in terms of sound from the C3 in every way but I haven't listened to the AGPtek H1 or other, literally millions of, DAPs out there now. So I think you need to take my comments with a pinch of salt. I really wish someone else whom has bought it, can chip in with comparisons to other players.

Also I wouldn't recommend buying it before they have another firmware update. It's still a bit buggy. It freezes when playing some files for not very apparent reason, for example. And even C3 plays gapless so I'm baffled as to why it's so difficult to have gapless in the newer players (C10 also lack gapless I believe). And it's been a while since the last update, so I don't know if they have 'orphaned' the C200 already. I hope not haha

My C200 order has arrived to my country today, so I'm probably going to get it on next week. Just to report that interest towards Colorfly C200 is not totally dead, even though this thread has been quiet. I'm looking forward to hear and experience it, probably great step up from C3 in sound and UI (that's right).

I got my C200 today, but it doesn't seem to like my 64gb micro sd card. It shows scanning media note but then it gets to boot loop. Maybe that's due my card being FAT32 format, I'll try FAT64.

May I suggest try FAT32 format again but using
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

Previously when I tried using the FAT32 64 GB card I used for Fiio X3 on Colorfly C3, my C3 just won't recognised the card.
Eventually, I found out GUIFormat by Ridgecrop after going through C3 threads, which solved my issue.
Hopefully this can help yours as well.

But I'm talking of C200, in fact, the reason my 64gb card was on FAT32 was exactly because C3 didn't recognise it with FAT64. Well, C3 did work great after formatting it to FAT32 but now I have C200 which has this problem.

So, now I formatted my sd card to exFat format, and at least one song I copied right away to card played well. Now just I copy my entire music collection to card, I shall see if it works then. Just a pity then I won't be able to use that same card with C3 anymore.

I finally got my massive almost 60gb music collection to my card. My sd card adapter just broke so I had to use SLOW usb cable line, so it was pretty much 2 - 3.5 Mb/s, took something like 7 hours to copy everything. Now it's way past midnight but I just couldn't go to sleep before hearing this dap. But I'm really impressed with sound quality, so clean and good. Navigation is quite solid and fast, definitely better than those touch pads like on C3. Major complaint however is that ~1s cut off from beginning of song, which has been reported other head-fiers aswell. I don't remember has anyone mentioned that little click sound from inside player, it seems like there's mechanical relay switch inside this player, pretty cool I'd say. It's there to mute all pops and such to be heard from phones, pretty high-end, I didn't know those were used on portable daps. It just might be problem with those song beginning cut offs, Colorfly must to put some delay to song beginning that the switch has enough time to close. Now it seems that song begins before switch closes (click sound) and hence very beginning cannot be heard. Cool feature, but needs optimisation, which is hopefully seen in future FW updates. But SOUND, it's gorgeous! But maybe it's time for sleep now.

Formatting type for SD Card on DAPs is a strange thing.

My Colorfly C3 don't read the FAT32 cards that was recognised by my other DAPs (Fiio, Shanling, etc).
It only read cards formatted to FAT32 by Ridgecorp GUIFormatter.
Cards used for my C3 will also need to have id tags removed to prevent pop sounds.

My Hifiman HM650 on the other hand, has no problem using ExFAT Cards but would intermittently can't detect FAT32 Cards when they are being used.

As such, I find it handy to keep a few different type of cards ( SanDisk or Samsung btw, 16GB to 128GB size, FAT32 and ExFAT type) for occasions that need troubleshooting.

Anyway, back to C200. Looking forward to more impression and reviews. Thanks.

I observed that when line out is used, song beginning cut of is not present anymore, or sometimes tiny bit still, but definitely not that huge ~1s. That is because the switch relay isn't in use when used line out. But there's reason why switch is used, because song beginning is a bit buggy sometimes, distorted and sometimes panned to other channel before it goes normal. Problem might have been worse from headphone out, but I think it's not that bad from LO. I mean I would rather hear some sligthly buggy beginning, than no beginning at all. BUT I guess Colorfly knows what they're doing, but I'm really hoping FW update and solution for this problem.

Also, there was some lack of info about auto resume. I comfirm there is NOT auto-resume on C200 right now. It just shows root folder when booted up, just like good old C3.

But despite of those drawbacks, I definitely don't regret purchasing C200. It's the sound that counts and it's fantastic.
