I know I could search for a similar thread, but I'm lazy!

Right, I was going to get some DT880s to be a second set of cans beside my HD580s, but recent occurances have scuppered this plan.

I am now in the market for some closed things.

My budget is not such an issue, I want something in the same sort of class as the 580. The DT770s look okay, but I'm not fan of a coiled cable...
Also they needn't be extremely closed, if you get me? Semi-open, but not semi-open like DT880s are!

Am I being foolish imagining I can get closed phones that might rival 580s for the same price or cheaper? I might be up for 2nd hand if there are dearer ones...

Yup. Sorry.

Beyer DT-250/250. Warmer than Senns, comfortable, and very well built. They do not have the boomy bass of the DT-770, but they do have a lush midrange. Very Gradoesque in a closed can. Got mine for about $140. Worth every penny.

They're 250-80s, are the 250s similar looking? They do look really nice, not a huge fan of the grey pads. I'd prefer 250Ohms, seeing as I'm using an SM3 which drives the 300Ohm 580s very well. Is that lead straight and it looks detachable?

mahlerfan - In UK terms I got lucky with my Senns, £100, when RRP is more like £200.

So you got them for a markup.

Ever been to England? In general we can expect to pay in £s what in the US is in $s, for electrical stuff generally

I did see them for £85(580s) on a site, but it was hard to come across, not exactly your froogle search.

Yeah

I live in the UK aswell some prices are scandalous, on the plus side however Linn, Meridian, Naim and Cyrus gear is relatively cheap on the used market.

Heh, £100 is quite a 'good' UK price. Mind you, 580s are well worth £300. I love them.

Importing is a quite good idea, the Queen does charge 25% on anything though.

My first headphone purchase were HD-580's, about 6 years ago. I bought them for £67 new from an online outlet. Unfortunately they don't sell them anymore, but especially at the time, it was quite the steal. The real killer is that when I upgraded about a year ago, I sold them on ebay for more than I bought them for

If you want something that sounds similar to the 580s, you could check out the AKG K271. I'm not sure how much you'll be paying for them in England, however.

good luck!

Nice, translating the site was instant too. The 250s are all black on there.

I can't recommend you any of the beyer phones, since I haven't listenend to them, but according to the facts you and beyer give this is probably a match.
You can also change all kinds of stuff, colour of many things, leatherheadband I thought, inscriptions etc.
Good luck
