Title explains it. I'm not really interested in bass. I'm looking for rich mids and sparkling highs in a closed headphone package. Money no object but not too crazy and obviously the best value wins!

Well, yes. A similar sound signature to the SRH940, only without being uncomfortable.

lol, SRH940 or 1540 was going to be my recommendation.

MrSpeakers Ether C?  If that's too expensive, maybe the Audio Technica ATH-A1000X.  I've never heard the A1000X, but I have owned the A900X for over a year and it fits that description and the A1000X is said to be better in every way.

The A900X and A1000X have been on my mind.

I am just a little concerned about the design. Do they slip around a lot?

depends on your head, but I've had multiple of the air suspension design audio technica systems and never had an issue.  However, they aren't great for small heads, as on very small heads they sometimes require goofy looking rubber band contraptions to get enough clamp to hold them on.  But you should be good if you have a medium or large head.

Like fjrabon said these headphones have a picky fit.  Also, pretty much every model has a different fit.  The A900X is meant for moderate or slightly large heads.  Not sure about the A1000X, but if any of them are too large then you can just tie the wings together with a rubber band and you should be fine.  Also different pads can affect the fit (and sound).

Very helpful indeed.

Do you know if the A1000X has the same sound signature as the A900X, just with a few tweaks to make it slightly better. Or is it very different?

Thanks in advance.

I believe @PurpleAngel has had both and can give you some first hand experience, so you may want to ask him.  This review below compares the open backed versions to each other, AD900X and AD1000X.

He says the AD1000X images much better and is a bit more colored (upper bass and upper mid emphasis).  I would think these attributes translate to the closed back models to some degree.  Also, it seems like you might like these colorations.

Also I had a huge brain fart and forgot about the new models coming out soon; A900Z and A1000Z.

Seems they're out in Japan already.  Some have sold them on Ebay for presumably elevated prices.

I also forgot about the ATH-M70X.  I think it's meant to be very neutral.

Thanks again Rhamnetin!

I have gathered a short(ish) list:

Beyerdynamic T70p
ATH-A900X/ATH-A1000X / Z versions
ATH-M70x
ATH-MSR7
KRK KNS 8400
Ultrasone PRO 750
Fostex T50RP

Any thoughts?
