Hi,

I'm looking for a set of closed headphones that would be perfect for funk which is mainly what I listen to (e.g Maceo Parker, James Brown, Lakeside, Con Funk Shun, Parliament, Chic...). My price range is about 300 usd, and as I will be traveling for a couple of months, so I'm looking for something that will work without an amp for the time being and that you can wear for several hours. I was looking at the AKG K 271, but i'm afraid they will lack some bass... Then I was looking at the AKG K 81, but i've heard they are rather uncomfortable... Any advice will be highly appreciated!

THANKS!

Denons! AH-D2000 new or AH-D5000 used. I use my AH-D7000 for pop, dance and funk. It's got one of the best bass.

Now, THIS is where I can recommend the Shure 840s.

Great bass response really kicks nicely at the bottom end, and they are really nice and smooth. Sometimes I prefer the raw energy of my Grados for funk, but the smoothness and richness of the Shures really complement funk nicely.

Highly recommended.

I also would recommend the denon's AH-D2000...they have a deep and powerful bass great for my electro music and some hip hop also, a little pricey though.

Thank you for the replies!

The Denon AH-D2000 look great, but pricey indeed, they are selling for 430 USD here! (I live in Switzerland) And the Shure 840 are being sold for 229 USD... I think I might go for those, unless someone has tried both and thinks there is a HUGE difference in terms of comfort and sound, in that case I might opt to live on instant noodles for a month and go for the Denon's

I like the HD650 for funk, but these might not be what you are looking for. Try the DT770, which is closed.

Also consider the Shure SRH750 DJ... I think it's a better buy, cheaper, and works better for funk.

WOW, the Shure SRH750 DJ also look great, happy I waited.

I just went over this thread:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/shu...review-469799/
and it looks like they are exactly what i'm looking for, plus they are 100 usd cheaper than the Denon's... hmmm, I'll wait a little longer to see if anything pops up, but I might just go for the Shure SRH750, thanks Mochan, you will most probably be my god for one day

Well, not overwhelming bass. I tried the AKG240, and those were too heavy on the bass (but ok, they were plugged to an amp), something lower than that would be great. From my side, I can only judge with the pair of SE530 I have, which I know, is uncomparable. So, for me perfect would be enough bass to keep my foot thumping on a Brothers Johnson track, but not something that will put Fred Wesley's trombone solo in the background.

anything you buy, get it from a shop w/ a return policy...we all hear differently and have different gear, tastes and expectations. I personally like a very light and tight bass reponse, I'm a "mids" head

the Denon D2k is said to have a very loud bass, so take your time! and get it from a shop where you can send it back just in case...and also, "welcome to head-fi, sorry 'bout your wallet"

FWIR Shure 840 would benefit greatly from amp, and Shure 440, which are cheaper, sound nearly the same w/o an amp.
You may also take a look at Ultrasone HFI-780.

Lol, you guys should post a warning before subscribing to this site. Yesterday I had a clear budget and idea of what I was looking for. After spending 7 hours yesterday evening/morning on this site, my budget exploded by 600% and was ready to sell my car, girlfriend and dog in the black market for a pair of HD800, but I slept on it and decided to post a thread instead. I would qualify this experience as going to the casino, you loose any notion of time, purpose and money, luckily there some experienced users that keep an eye on the neewbies.
I will give the Shure a try, and will definitely order them from a store that has a return policy, even though I will have to order from the USA soon, because in a couple of months I will most probably be black listed from all the Hi Fi stores in Switzerland

Thanks again for the advice,
