Closed alternative to HD650?
Aug 3, 2007 at 5:17 PM Post #16 of 44
Personally, I found the cable upgrade to the HD650 to help clear up the high-end and provide some better definition to the sound, but not enough to justify the price difference (please, no flaming, just personal opinion). At those prices, you could almost just go try another headphone altogether or put the money towards a better source. I think the HD650's have the most dramatic improvement when upgrading the source, hence my current and ongoing experiments with amps...

I do wonder if part of the issue is that my m^3 was built with the hd650s in mind and the denons are a whole different can.

It might be a synergy thing more than anything.

perhaps I should just rebuy the 650s and built a cone of silence for myself

I heard the Denon D2000's and D5000's back to back for about an hour in my home. The D5000's had been recabled by Alex.

The cable itself, physically and visually is definitely an upgrade over stock, but in terms of SQ, I had a very hard time differentiating between the two cans...ALL THINGS CONSIDERED INCLUDING THE WOOD CUPS OF THE D5000.

The Equation Audio RP-21's have full bass like the HD 650 if that is what are looking for.

Precisely...The stock D2000 and recabled D5000 were extremely similar. I do not have much confidence in my ability to tell them apart if subjected to a blind test.

I have just ordered a pair of D5000's for the home (I use the D2000's at the office) which I will not be getting recabled. I will spend a few weeks with both and post my thoughts.

In what setup did you do comparison? Have you been able to detect difference from recabling with any other headphones, like HD650 for instance?
Thanks

I don't get it, some people review the D2000 as closed versions of the DT990 which possibly have an overlybright sound where as some say the D2000's are closed versions of the HD650's which are known for their refined dark sound. Which one is it??

My 2 cents...be patient, save your money awhile longer, and get a set of Ultrasone Edition 9's. Or heck, throw patience out the window, max out your credit card, and have instant gratification (along with a 21.9% monthy charge). Either way, you will end up with one HECK of a good headphone.

I guess I can see the comparison between the Denons and the HD650s, but comparing the stock versions, the Denons are quite a bit brighter. I think the comparison probably stems from the bass, and the fact that both have a bit of richness to them. Also the D2000s are also pretty airy so the highs are less likely to be shrill, like a Grado or DT990 can be to some of us.

That being said, I did a quick test on the Apache between my Apuresound single -ended D2000s, and the my RAL balanced 650s, and the general sound sig was pretty similar. The RAL cable brightens up the 650s but the D2000s were still a bit brighter. The balanced 650s were superior overall, but for my taste a nearly perfect open/ closed combo.
