I have never had the pleasure of listening to a Stax system. What could I buy for less than $500 that would give me an introduction to what I hear is a unique sound experience?

the CHEAPEST way is to go to a meet and have a listen

ebay and this forums "for sale" section are also excellent sources of used gear.

finally, a 2050 complete system (headphones + driver unit) can be had for $600 if you want new

Don't know a whole lot about Stax or Electrostatic headphones for that matter...but I do know that you can pick up their older Electret headphones for relativity cheap. The SR30 goes for pretty cheap (under $100 on ebay right now, but around that normally I think).

That could be the literal cheapest way to experience Stax headphones. But I really don't know if it's quality or not

stax needs Amps, just having an headphone doesnt cut it. And yes that price listed above is $500 USD (amp + headphones, i suppose that is kinda cheap for an stax :P

Look for vintage Lambdas (preferrably SR-Lambda) and adaptor combo from the FS/FT forum. They come up from time to time and can be have for around $300. This combo is ridiculously good sounding for just $300.

What he said. There are plenty of vintage Stax rigs you can get for less than 500. Most of them involve having a transformer box and you'll have to provide a speaker amp for them, though.

Don't get any of the electrets (SR-30, SR-40), they're almost bound to sound worse than whatever you have now.

That guy has come down $100 in the last 8 weeks.

He's got another $175 to go, imho.

$250 for an SR-34 kit? pshaw. I paid $270 for my SR-Lambda + SRD-7.

I paid, um, I think my total investment in my SR-34 kit was $25 + a lot of hassle piecing things together from two partially broken pairs.
