I need a good but dirt cheap Toslink DAC. One that preferably shows what format of audio is coming in.

Anything? My budget is $65.. Seriously.

...No.

Then what DAC is the cheapest that does what I request? Keep in mind I'm not looking for the best sounding, just adequate.

This one is the cheapest I can think of (w/ optical in): Superpro DAC707
It's been reviewed and written about quite a lot here. A search in the Dedicated Source area will help.

**** Earlier post:
Audiotrak Prodigy Cube - not good has digital OUT only.
It's actually not bad at all in terms of sound quality. I've listened to it next to my Nuforce uDAC, they are close with a bit of edge to the latter.

A receiver will be too expensive and too huge.

This DAC707 seems to be good. I'll possibly save up.

I have a monitor in warranty repair, a nice 26", but they haven't even fixed it yet because they can't get the part. I requested that they just give me my money back (aka, they "buy" the monitor), if they do, I'll probably look at the Musiland MD-10, because that was what I REALLY want, and I'd have the money then.

The cheapest you could get AFAIK is this:
Mini HI-FI 4X TDA1543 parallel connection NOS DAC B - eBay (item 170465554491 end time Mar-31-10 07:17:42 PDT)

Comes out to $48.80 after 8% Bing CB. This is the 4x TDA1543 version; I have the version with only 1 TDA1543 chip and it's perfectly serviceable. I wouldn't use it for a setup dedicated to audio, being that it sounds a bit boring, but otherwise not too bad I guess. It took me a little while to discern the differences between my $200 VALAB, keeping in mind this is the 1x TDA1543 instead of the 4x linked above (the difference being, VALAB being "funner" to listen to). Aside from that, it works fantastically when you just need a TOSLINK/SPDIF DAC, such as in my case where I use it to feed speakers of a TV hooked up to my PC.
