Cheap Headphones for Daughter

Those ATH-FC700A are out of my range a bit, but look pretty nice.

2 key issues would be 1) will they isolate so others can't hear what you are listening to and 2) can an iphone drive them?

ES-7. They are closed, so they don't leak. Also meant to be driven from a portable, so driving them shouldn't be an issue. Not sure about isolation though, look up a couple reviews.

Not great isolation on the ES7, but they definitely won't leak.

I love my pair.

The ES7's a better headphone but the Panasonic RP-HTX7 is more 'portable' in the sense of having a shorter cable and being a closer (less dorky looking) fit to the head. (The ES7 can be bent to fit closer than stock, but still isn't as 'portable looking' as the Panasonic.) The Panasonic's cable is single-sided while the ES7's is two-sided, in case that makes a difference to you either way.

I'm in the minority on this but IMO the ES7 really wants amplification and is dull-sounding without it, while the RP-HTX7 sounds better to me unamped. But I come from a perspective of listening amped nearly all the time, and I'm probably more sensitive to needs-an-amp artifacts than your daughter is likely to be.

If you could stretch your budget a little bit the Audio-Technica ATH-ES7 are a great option to consider, would work fine with an iPod/iPhone and scale decently with amping.

The ES7 is in my price range IF I get the refurbished ones at $55. The only reason I would consider the Panasonic ones is the "coolness" of the look. She usually "rents" the cans that they provide at the library so that is what she is used to. Big and bulky. But they don't leak sound. I wanted to get her something that would sound better though and are comfortable.

I would probably get the ES7 for sure, but now this "look weird on the head" thing has me concerned. Looks are probably about 70% of this purchase.

How about a pair of audio technica ath em7 ? They look drop dead sexy and sound pretty much alright (as far as reviews on amazon are concerned). They go for about $60 shipped.

They were nice-sounding phones the pair I had but the cabling crapped out inside of 6 months and Audio-Technica just point-blank refused to deal with them.

Shame, I really like them.

They told me that at the price I had paid, they must've been fake.

I know I got 'em at a good price but that was just poor, they hadn't even looked at them, nor were they prepared to.
