Just browsing the web for a new soldering iron and came across this Hakko http://www.hakkousa.com/products.asp?pid=508, does anyone have an opinion on it?

40W's a bit high for fine electronics work... 15-30W is what you're looking for.

I would look for something that has temperature control. And, it is worth it to have a nice iron, and a few tips for it, if you are going to DIY.

Have not use this iron so can't comment much. The last I own was a Goots, made in Japan and was quite good. Well 40w is a bit high but if you have fast hand, it will be fine. On the other hand the extra heat will be useful when you solder thick wire, like a fat speaker cable etc. If you want to DIY and have lots of project in mind, get a soldering station. If you just wanted to try out DIY, this is OK.

I use a cheap 40W iron and it works alright - and I have shaky hands.. But I agree 30W would be better.

That's only good if oyu live in the US, otherwise the shipping and importing fees will nail you to the wall.

Try the Hakko "Dash" 452 instead - 15W with a great sharp, pointy tip. Best basic electronics iron I've seen (I'm no expert, though). You can get some really sharp points for SMD work, too!

I forgot to mention, I would be using the iron to solder Interconnect plugs to audio cable or some point to point, I thought the 40 watt would be O.K?
