I am interested in a few Sony studio headphones -- specifically, MDR-V900HD, MDR-C900ST, and the MDR-7506.

Has anybody here spent any time with these headphones AND phones like the HD650, K701, DT880, etc? I am very curious as to how the studio phones compare and whether they are worth the money. I was not a big fan of the SA5000 (way too bright, harsh, metallic, sharp-edged for me). Are the studio models going to have a similar sound?

(I am considering these for my personal use with classical music, not for any studio. My favorites, of dynamic headphones, are the R10 and the HD650, if that gives you a good sense of what I like sound-wise.)

I appreciate everyone's help.

I spent some time with my DT770s and my father's MDR-7506s, and his Sonys are super bright, very sharp sounding. Too much so for extended listening. We discussed it, and he admitted that they were overly bright, but that he liked that for his application which was not casual listening but rather video editing. He wanted to hear every p-pop and rough audio cut.

Protip: Don't buy "DJ" monitors for personal listening. =p

You might be surprised at just how good a lot of studio gear is. Headphones like the Grado HP-1000 and AKG K-1000 were designed for pro studio work. Audiophiles picked up on them later. I've been enjoying the heck out of an AKG K-240DF and a Beyerdynamic DT48 - both were intended for the studio - and both sound terrific.

As for the Sony headphones, I owned the MDR-V6 for years. I gave them away when the HD-650 showed up, but not before comparing the two. The MDR-V6 is brighter up top and a little faster than the HD-650. It is somewhat similar to the SA5000 in that way. I can't really compare the MDR-V6 to the DT880 and K-701, since I didn't own them at the same time.
