CEC headphone amplifier?

Please feel free to ignore my last post. It looks like it will run the K100s. My RKV ca run them quite well using only 3W of power, so if this thing runs 8W at the speaker outputs, sounds like more than enough.

Now the questions are: how does it sound, and who will take the plunge first??

According to this (waaaaaahhhhh!!!!????

) another best suited high impedance amp....Why is so dificult to make an amp suited for low impedance cans also!!!!And if it is why do they recommend then the 200-600 Omhs ones?

Finally got my hands on one from the local (Singapore distributor) of CEC. I can confirm that it is not meant for low impedence cans. Distortion at anything but low volume. Anyways, the manual says to take advantage of LEF amplifier technology (LEF operating range) you need to use headphones which have an impedence of 200 to 600 ohms. Don't ask me what LEF Technoloy is.

It is also made my Candieas Engineering.

Initial listening to the amp confirmed that you shouldn't try it with low impedence cans. However after 48 hours of run in the amp sounds much better even with low impedence cans played at moderate volume level. Anyways I switched to the Senn HD-600 - much better sounding but it was still a little bright. Yet I was enjoying this little amp. So I switched from my Rotel RCD-971 to the warmer sounding Marantz CD-6000 OSE and switched interconnects from Kimber Silver Streak to PBJ. I'm still letting this amp run in but it is a good if a little bright start. BTW it has run in for 48 hours so far.

I'll give more impressions once it hits the 150 hour mark.

The price of this unit in Singapore is S$600 (about USD 340 - 350)

I also tried it as an amp for speakers. Again it was on the bright side of things. So if you have a warm/lush pair of relatively high sensitivity (90 db min says the literature) speakers and wish to add some bite then this may just be the ticket.

Now if only it would get a little fuller sounding with more run in I would say it might suit people who have Senn HD-600/580, Beyer DT-250 (250 ohm version), DT-990, DT-770 if you wanted to somewhat reduce the dark nature of these headphones. Sony MDR 7056 (aka V6) is currently overly bright.

But we'll see once the 150 hour mark has been reached.

Rameish,

I saw the CEC amp on a Japanese website, and was curious about it. After some search online, I found my way to this forum, and then to your post. What is your opinion of the amp now that you've had it for several months? Is it still somewhat bright?

I am looking for an amp for the Sennheiser HD600. Currently the two contenders on my list are the ASL MG Head, roughly the same price as the CEC amp, and the Earmax Pro.

gundam91,

I got to listen briefly to the CEC51 and found it harsh and thin sounding with the HD580. The source was not great I believe. However, the same source was hooked up to a Luxman P-1 headphone amp, and the latter sounded MUCH better with the 580s.

Although I did not listen to it, for $300 budget, I'd jump on the MG Head. From the hundreds of comments on this site, it seems clear to me this MG Head will pair much better with the HD600 than the CEC HD51.

Arnaud.

CEC headphone amp does require at least 150 hours of run in and I would say only try this if you find the Senn HD-600/HD-580 or Beyer DT-990/DT-880/DT-770 to be dark and overly rich. This is one bright amp where the harhness goes away after about 150 hours of burn-in (I used the XLO burn in disc). Don't even try this amp with low impedence cans like Grado or Sony CD-3000. So if you can't audition a burnt in unit it's gonna be a hit and miss. All the above is of course IMO. YMMV :). Note I find the HD-600 to sound too rich and veiled in most other systems. So if you don't, take that into consideration.
