I heard very good stuff about Cary's tube amps. This is in a good price range for a Cary amp and I really would want to try it.

Definitely targeted toward relatively efficient headphones, given the somewhat modest output power (by recent standards). Plenty for Beyer/Grado/Senn/AT kind of headphones, but not a planar lover's amp.

I'd like to hear one for sure, though - I love my Cary SLP-05 preamp.

I talked to someone fairly high up at Cary recently about something non headphone related.  We got onto the topic of headphones and they didn't even know what an HD800 was.  Was somewhat alarming.

You're going into the headphone accessories business but you don't know anything about popular headphones?

Not only that, but the headphone out of the SLP-05 is deeply flawed. There is a very obvious bass roll-off filter, no clue why they did that, but it makes the headphone out on the SLP-05 essentially useless. So from my perspective, while I like a lot of Cary stuff, and own one of their products, they have a LOT to prove in terms of making a good headphone amp.

From reading your conversation I hope this product isn't rushed to meet demands...

Who knows, maybe they made something magic and special.

Update! I heard one of these a few days back. I'm not one to be very wordy, but I've had about a dozen amps over the last 20 years, and this one has the finest tonal quality I've ever heard(of my owned amps), it's no cooter, but sounds very fine to my ears.

I'm now on the hunt for one under $800. Made a couple of offers on Ebay, will see.

Update 2, Found one! I love it!! It's such a Fantastic Amp!

The person who designed it does.

"The person who designed it does."

I can personally attest to that also. He is a highly experienced and well trained audio engineer and is extremely knowledgeable in this field in addition to non headphone audio related products.

I have known him personally for the last 8 years and while I may not know which end of a soldering iron to hold he definitely does. How's that for an endorsement?

I am a big fan of Cary audio and for that price point, why not offer it with a fully balanced amplification.  Headamp market is getting to be quite fiest at sub $1500.00 category.  Still, Cary Audio is synonymously associated with class leader in term of sound.

Will be picking up our stock of these today and will post pics etc. The final version is a much improved version than the one we took to the Charlotte CanJam. This is what I have been told, but have not heard yet. It was already a great amp:)
