Cantonese Chinese Artist Recommendation: Miriam Yeung!

To those of you who listen to Chinese artists: I can't recommend Miriam Yeung too much! Doesn't matter that she hasn't released many new albums recently: just get hold of *any* album you can find, it's almost guaranteed to be good

Putting a Miriam album into my player and listening to my HD580s makes me think I'm listening to Orpheus sing

The prominent vocal music makes a pleasant change from the usual guitar-laden, drum-banging pop songs

Interesting recommendation, I'll consider grabbing one of her CDs myself next time I shop at YesAsia.

I was also considering getting CDs from Sally Yeh, Vivian Chow, and Sammy Cheung. Oh my wallet is gonna be hurting...

i got one of her albums off a friend, 1 to 100.. it's more vocalish i reckon, like more for adult types.. for us 'teenages' we need the bass lol

erm, well, I don't know how many of you actually know Cantonese, coz for me the ratio of significance of the lyrics to the tune is up to 50:50 for me.

I especially recommend ?ÅŒã“I‰Ì 'The Last Song', the last song on My Favourite Hits 2001--the peak builds up in a way that I have never heard before in a pop song. (though I wonder if one would call her songs pop? What are the boundaries...) It's nothing like your ordinary pop song where you're repeating yourself by the time you're halfway or even 1/3 of the way through the song... and the closer to the end, the more moving (if you understand the lyrics, it's a sad song, as are 1/2 of her songs. heh)

i dont know cantonese or manadrin enough to totally understand the song.. i can pick up a few phrases here and there. though by reading the lyrics i can look in the dictionary =)

btw, where is the cheapest place to get chinese cds? singapore? any cheap online stores that charge at like street price?

edit: like less than US$10. when i was in singapore, cds are like under 20 singaporean bucks...

I just went to Chongshan and Shenzhen (in Guangzhou) and the CDs there are like $1-2 (RMB$10-13) a pop

They may well be pirated though

But you can't really tell, they look 90% like the CDs in Hong Kong and 99% like the real thing (after all, CD covers may change from place to place...)

hey chongshan? that's where my parents are from! haha.. yeah well im after good sound quality and the pirated ones i've heard are really that good souding.. if i wanted pirated ones, i can just download and burn off net=)
