Stax is much, much cheaper in Japan. Plus, if you get them there, you'll save on shipping to North America.

Akirhabara is a good place to start. Sometimes you can find someone selling a relativly rare headphone for a reasonable price. I've only heard of passing rumours regarding akihabara from former co-workers though.

that's out of my range... unless if they make anything under $300

The SR-303 and SR-003 (maybe the SR-001 mk2 system even?) are available for less than $300 on pricejapan.com, they'll also ship inside japan by the way..

audio-technica, stax, victor/jvc, kenwood, aiwa, pioneer, panasonic, sony, denon, sharp, elecom... probably a few more. there are quite a few models and brands easily available in Japan that you don't find in the states at all.

stax headphone/amp combos start from around the $350 ~$400 range for the SRS-2050A intro model and if you manage to find a used one (or the slightly older SRS-2020 model with the older version of the amp, same can) it'll probably come in under $300.

what a butt-ugly can!!! (sr-2050) It looks like they took 2 microphones / speakers and glued them to a headband!! If I took the cans that I am to purchase outside, I'd like to not get laughed at..

Lambdas aren't intended as a fashion statement, and they call them earspeakers for a reason.

I tell you one thing though, I'd rather go out in public wearing SR-202s than wearing a K1000 or a Jecklin Float.
