i dont see howanyone who is a audiophile could say they could buy a iem and it be their ''last'' iem no matter the price, your taste might become different, your rigs amps might change, your dacs might change. there are so many variables that could change that may make the se846 sound bad or less desirable. you get the idea

Does the ie800 also excel at mid bass or does it sacrifice mid for sub bass?

I don't know if I'm experiencing this,"correctly", but I have they beyer dynamic dt770's and sub bass is incredible, but I find the mid bass to drop out.

Is the difference between the sub bass between the 846 and 800 marginal or is it marked?

I think if you value midbass the Shure se846 is the way to go. The differences in "bassiness" of the headphones may be due to song selection and amp selection. In my experience the ie800 REALLY cranks out the subbass if a song calls for it, otherwise I generally find the se846 the "bassier" headphone. If you are comparing the 846 and 800 though, a bigger question is if you can take the ie800's treble energy.
