Can ears atrophy?

I have heard the claim that if sensory input is denied for an extended period of time, the sense slowly fails. This is most often mentioned with regard to eyesight, although I've also heard it alluded to other senses as well.

I think the issue goes beyond merely hearing, though, and to the question of comprehending and analyzing what comes in through your ears. Just as human languages comprise vocabulary and syntax, so do all sorts of noise, but most especially music. I think that if you regularly exercise the habit of listening critically, that strength only improves over time.
