Can ear pads affect the sound in other ways than frequency response?

For example, if you put ear pads with harder material on headphones, could it possibly cause bouncing the frequencies in the cup,
making the sound muddy? (I've heard when a headphone measures ringing in the impulse response, the headphones usually have
poor soundstage).

The thing is, I have old Sony V6 with some pads from sound-damping cans and there is really no instrument separation and detail,
but the frequency response is about right.
