Saw this little bit today.

MSRP: Approx. $1350
Cambridge Audio 840C CD Player

The 840C takes its position as Cambridge Audio's flagship CD player. Incredibly at this price point, the 840C features ATF™ (Adaptive Time Filtering) asynchronous, upsampling technology, developed in conjunction with Anagram Technologies of Switzerland. This system intelligently interpolates 16-bit/44.1kHz CD data to 24-bit/384kHz data, through the use of a 32-bit Analog Devices 'Black-Fin' DSP. This in turn feeds two 24-bit/384kHz DACs in dual differential formation.

I wonder if a seriously modded 640C v2 (or maybe v1) can compete with the 840C

I think I'll get the 840C and mod it.

Boy, that was fast thinking

I'm interested in the 840c mostly because of the digital inputs, which the 640c doesn't have. If the DAC capability is more than just a hard-to-use marketing trick, it might be just the thing for me.

With digital inputs and custom DSP to dual differential DACs it sounds like you get a lot for your money.

Although the implementation is more important than the feature, I am curious why they chose asynchronous upsampling. Perhaps the optimum performance with that specific DAC is 384khz? Or perhaps that is just the maximum sampling rate for that specific chip?

At least its interpolation is "intelligent"

Well, I guess it's more of a question of why they chose the Anagram Tech solution that uses that particular configuration and why Anagram Tech chose to make a DAC using those features...

Digital input and balanced output? Dang, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing this one.

Just a side note:

I corresponded with Cambridge Audio through email.

The 840A is currently being shipped to distributors with website details expected to be posted up shortly.

Don't have the specs but the power ratings are 120 watts RMS into 8 ohms and 200 watts RMS into 4 ohms.

And for thoes not awake yet. That is the 840A, "A" as in amp. Not 840C, "C" as in CDPlayer.
