I have experienced with both the HD580 and the HD600 that the sound cracks when using the cardas cable, if you pull the cable a bit the sound comes back. Both the Hd580 and the Hd600 were bought second/third handed. Is there anything to tweak or do?

Sounds like the physical connector between the cable and the headphones is damaged. Pull out the cable and take a look at the little pins. One is probably bent. Take a pair or needlenose pliers and grab the pin through a t-shirt. (The t-shirt will protect the pin from being scratched by the pliers.) Then slightly and carefully bend the pin back.

If the problem is in the female connector (inside the headphones), you can use the same method to bend a pin slightly out. That ought to press harder against the internal connector and make a better contact.
