Budget Speakers <$50?

Do you already have an amp to power them or are you looking for powered monitors? I don't think you can get decent PMs for $50. The obvious choice for passive bookshelves I think would be the Best Buy Insignias, but I think their price was raised a bit ago due to how popular they became.

edit: Just checked. $75 on Best Buy's website, but I think you could probably score them cheaper (new) on eBay or something.

I recently bought some JBL E20 speakers from ebay - as new from an overstock/customer returns specialist - I paid $27 plus $18 shipping - depending on your luck you might even get a cheaper price. I am extremely happy with my purchase, the speakers are
(H x W x D): 10-7/8" x 6" x 8-1/8" and sit on my bookshelf.

If you take this option read the descriptions very carefully some speakers are in better condition than others - mine are immaculate, had the manual (sealed), the grilles, the stick on pads for the bottom and the original box.

oops, when I searched for insignia they were the only ones that came up. I guess I was in the wrong section.

Pardon my ignorance....

Do these bookshelf type speakers require a subwoofer? And what kind of amplifier do they need? Can you just use a headphone amp or do you actually need a receiver?

Most bookshelf speakers, certainly cheaper ones, will not have much response below about 70hz - so if that is important to you you would need a subwoofer. Personally I do not use one with my bookshelf speakers, they go down to about 70hz. If you are using a subwoofer you would probably need a receiver that has a specific subwoofer output - a traditional two channel amp would not have this facility.

Some headphone amps do have sufficient output to drive speakers but I think these are fairly rare. Headphone amps are generally designed to deliver 10s to 100s of mw levels rather than several watts which speakers tend to need.

My Nikko delivers 12 watts per channel and that is plenty to drive my small speakers.
