There'll be time to get by to get dry after the swimming pool
There'll be time to just cry i wonder why it didnt work out
Therell be time to fish fry for letters by yours truly
Yours truly

Someone in my dictionary's up to no good
I never find the very special words I should
So I have another party with a water glass
and I sit on all your actions its a birthing game
and I'll bet he needs a shower cause hes just like me
and the soldiers in the painting know your secret face
Well your parrot told me just how I can make you smile
Gonna let you do your thinking if you need awhile
but what I gave you made him get mad
A little bit funny how a thing like that
Could travel from one mouth in through another
and the next thing you know you gotta hear it from your brother and
The words they sting like a stump of old wasps
Remember when I said go throw the rock in there
and we ran through the woods to our good house
You forgot about the things that he could say like
I dont think that I like you anymore
Well I found new feelings at the feeling store
and I cant find you at our kissing place
and im scared of those new pair of eyes you have

So I duck out and go down to find the swimming pool
Hop a fence, leave the street and wet my feet I'll find a swimming pool
Cause when I'm snuffed out I doubt I'll find a swimming pool
Hop a fence, leave the street and wet my feet I'll find a swimming pool

But I don't wish that I was dead
A very old friend of mine once said
that either way you look at it you have your fits
I have my fits but feeling is good
confusions not a kiddney stone in my brain
but if were miscommunicating do we feel the same?
Then either way you look at it you have your fits
I have my fits but feeling is good

You gotta give a little you gotta get a little bit

One mo':

Richard and Linda Thompson - Shoot Out The Lights

They were breaking up at the time, and it's all over the record. You hear it from both sides of the gender gap, because her songs/vocals alternate with his. Titles: "Don't Renege On Our Love," "Walking On A Wire," "Man In Need," "Did She Jump Or Was She Pushed"

About half of The National's songs. Great stuff even when you haven't broken up recently

NOFX - Happy Breakup Song

Hello dear there somthin' on my mind
There somethin' between us I can't find
Can you please please show me the light
Because with you I refuse to fight

It's cause you have a new girlfriend
She gives you better head then me
It's cause that guy that you hide
I heard he can make you scream

I guess I'm a shmo
You have better people to f_ck than me
I guess that I'm the jerk
That lets you f_ck who ever you please

We used to have such good times
You lay before me as I tell you my mind
I listen as you talk about some girl
You said one day she'll be your wife

I guess I'm a shmo
You have better people to f_ck than me
I guess that I'm the jerk
That lets you f_ck who ever you please

By the way B_tch! You kiss my god damn ass
Eat sh_t and die you dirty f_ckin' person
F_ck off you stupid f_ckin' c_nt
I hope you choke on toxicshock
You f_ckin' *********

Gotta love a bit of tounge-in-cheek punk. No point in crying the days away to R.E.M.

As has been mentioned many times over, Sea Change and Blond on Blond are pretty much the quintessential albums here.

For anyone going through a break-up, I highly recommend Motion City Soundtrack. "Last Night", off of the album Even If It Kills Me,
that song just makes me want to bawl when I hear it.
Also by MCS:
"Calling All Cops", "Broken Heart" off of Kills...
"When You're Around", "Resolution", "Make Out Kids"- Commit This To Memory
"My Favorite Accident" off of I Am The Movie.

"Redundant" and "Scattered" on the album nimrod., as well as "Whatsername" on American Idiot- all by Green Day.

"Last Goodbye" - Jeff Buckley - Grace
That's more of a personal thing though, the song itself isn't that good. I was pretty tied up with this girl, and she was a huge Jeff Buckley fan. Second worst make out song ever, right behind "Slutgarden" by Marilyn Manson (but that's a story for another time).

"Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough For The Two Of Us", "This Is The Best Day Ever - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love and
"Cancer", "Sleep", and "I Don't Love You"- The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance

"The Futile", "Spidersong", "Every Man Has A Molly"- ...Is a Real Boy and "I Used To Have A Heart", "The Truth Is, You Should Lie With Me", and "Spores" In Defense of the Genre by Say Anything

"All We Know", "Brighter" - Paramore - All We Know Is Falling
"Don't Forget Me", "Dosed" - Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way
"Appels + Oranjes" - Smashing Pumpkins - Adore
"Snake Devil"- Scary Kids Scaring Kids - Scary Kids Scaring Kids
"You Made Me Cry"- Freddy Fender - Before The Next Teardrop Falls
"Leaving" - The Starting Line - Say It Like You Mean It
"You're So Last Summer"- Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends
"Yesterday's Feelings" - The Used - In Love And Death
"You're Cheatin' Heart", "Lovesick Blues", and "I Can't Help It"- Hank Williams
"I Need A Lover" - John Mellencamp - The Best That I Could Do
"You Take Me For Granted" - Merle Haggard - Jones Sings Haggard, Haggard Sings Jones
"Room Full of Roses"- Any version is great, my personal favorite is the Mickey Gilley interpretation.

There are also a whole host of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson songs I could put here, but to get all of those down, I'd probably be here all night...

That really depends on the situation of the break up.
I broke up with my GF yesterday, and I am happy that I did, so I'm just listening to my favorite music or happy songs.

John Gorka - "Armed With A Broken Heart"

Take this as a warning, to stay away from me.
'Cos the one that you used to know is not the one
that you're gonna see.
Someday we may laugh at this. Someday we may be friends.
But, for now you can keep you distance.
Stay away 'till the pieces mend.

This sudden loneliness has made me dangerous,
please don't watch me while I fall apart.
'Cos I'm sad and I'm angry and
I'm armed with a broken heart.

You know I will do anything, if it will keep you away.
But, I don't know what l'd do, if you said you were gonna stay.
Don't do me any favours, don't try to ease the pain
Won't you please let me hate you now,
so I won't fall for you again.

This sudden loneliness has made me dangerous
please don't watch me when I fall apart
'Cos I'm sad and I'm angry and
I'm armed with a broken heart

And what will get me through the night, is what I'll use with all my might
and to some peace I have a right but I pay so deeply.
And at my age I should be wise, now I'm untying all those ties.
The evidence in the eyes, that once saw so clearly, I once saw so clearly.

So take this as a warning to stay away from me.
'Cos the one that you used to know is not the one that you're gonna see.
Someday we may laugh at this, someday we maybe friends.
But, for now you can keep your distance,
Stay away till the pieces mend

This sudden loneliness has made me dangerous
Please don't watch me while I fall apart.
'Cos I'm sad and I'm angry and I'm armed with a broken heart
Yes, I'm sad and I'm angry and I'm armed with a broken heart

My favorite post-breakup line:
"Well if she wants to see me, you can tell her that I'm easily found." - Springsteen

Because I'm a Nine Inch Nails fan, but if you want something more on the agressive side, try Somewhat Damaged:

So impressed with all you do
Tried so hard to be like you
Flew too high and burnt the wing
Lost my faith in everything

Lick around divine debris
Taste the wealth of hate in me
Shedding skin succumb defeat
This machine is obsolete

Made the choice to go away
Drink the fountain of decay
Tear a hole exquisite red
screw the rest and stab it dead

Broken bruised forgotten sore
Too screw** up to care anymore
Poisoned to my rotten core
Too screw** up to care anymore

Broken bruised forgotten sore
Too screw** up to care anymore
Poisoned to my rotten core
Too screw** up to care anymore

In the back off the side far away
Is a place where I hide where I stay
Tried to say tried to ask I needed to
All alone by myself where were you?

How could I ever think it's funny how
Everything that swore it wouldn't change is different now
Just like you would always say we'll make it through
Then my head fell apart and where were you?

How could I ever think it's funny how
Everything you swore would never change is different now
Like you said you and me make it through
Didn't quite fell apart where the screw were you?
