I was kind of wondering about that- it's Bose, after all. I already hate their TriPorts and QC's(and just about everything else), so I'm assuming their CD player sucks big time too. Opinions?
(And no, I use an iRiver SlimX350- like a swiss army knife for portable CD players.)

Drop me a line, I'd like to hear it,
Abe

I enjoy mine. I'm not ready to publish a definitive review after only two weeks of listening, but that's partly because I think it's so good. It has everything my Sony D555 has, power, bass, soundstage and low-noise. No metal either, but I accept that over other cost cutting.

I wonder how it compares vs. what I'm using? The only thing mine lacks that I want is an optical out, but the analog stage through a Cardas HPI is perfect on everything I tested except some Sennheiser HD650's, and they were running one of the amps at the recent 3/26 meet, and they exposed voltage draw problems with my recording of the MGS3 title menu theme(not the Cynthia Harell Snake Eater song).

How bad is it in sound/features/durability?
...Or should I bring my ER6i's to a Bose store and a/b them on the PM1 versus the QC2 and TriPorts and see just who gets 'better sound through research'?
(Etymotic, that's for sure!!!)

That fact already makes me love my iRiver that much more. Ah, rechargeable NiMH gumstick batteries(more specifically, Sanyo HF-A1U)! My player has already paid for itself with all the money I saved on batteries...

I did not find the battery life to be short at all. I have no hard data, but my overall notice was that it outlasted my other portables so far. I'll keep an eye on it, but I have rechargeables, although an inline recharge is best. My Sony D-555 is far worse, if that means anything.

There is no optical out. I've used Koss KSC-35, Eytomics (can't recall model number but first generation issued) Beyer DT990 and Sharp HP-MD33S headphones. I prefer the sound through all of them to the Sony D-555, Panasonic SL-MP77 and even my RCA RP2020 units. It compares well with my non-portable Wheatfield HA1! (Prudence dictates that I not proclaim it superior or conclusively "even" until I test over time.)

My tastes are classical and pop/rock. I don't have IPOD or any other alternate portable technologies except non-portable SACD, so I look to others to do those comparisons.

Perhaps the most surprising thing is that anyone put new effort into portable CD, when I thought the glory days were past. I am very happy with this machine and use it constantly.

The Panasonic SL-MP77 has unusally good headphones, well matched to its less-than-powerful amplifier, but in every other way (except MP3 playback), the Bose trounces it when it comes to powerful real-world playback through my can collection.

Aman hates Bose soooo much he assumes it sucks before even posting anything useful about trying it or anything.

The D-555 would get like 10 hours of battery life if you're lucky, I was comparing it to my 2000 which gets like 30 off of one battery.

When I listened to the bose pcdp, the flatulence-bass must've been on like 2504% because there was so much bloated bass it was rediculous, the guy also had the volume maxed so maybe that helped that too...but still...it's big as hell.

I've heard most everything Bose makes, and since they rarely change their driver/enclosure technique, you can pretty much expect how their stuff is going to sound, i.e., they still use dual cube enclosures with the same paper+cloth drivers from the mid 90's. However, I still have some old 171's that came out of Bose's Japanese Westborough high end line and they sound pretty freaking decent, and they are rarer than crap(you'll have to look for the 121 to find their specs). In contrast though, I've a/b'd my current KLH setup versus my old Bose AM15 and the much cheaper KLH ($160 vs $1000+) system whalloped it, and still does, IMO, and so much so that I'm trying to get rid of all my Acoustimass junk as soon as possible.

In the future, I'd like to hear a 5/6.1 system that sounds like the ER6i!
That's how to share your

All bets are off with any bass boost or other eq applied. My tests are with settings flat. I found there to be no artificial highlighting, or at least nothing beyond tubelike, which may be why I felt it comparable to the Wheatfield HA1.

I've never had Bose speakers in my home system, so that's another member's testimony that's needed. I tried it solely based upon other users' positive comments and I paid under $30, making it a genuine audio bargain.

The setup I have now isn't sub/sat as compared to the AM15-- it's a pair of 9250B floorstanding towers matched with a model 9900 center/satellite package. It's bulkier, but the towers make all the difference. Also, getting anything from Bose that's not an accessory for less than $50 is a pretty good deal, but for the money, I still think there are better options out there in the future. I thought that way when I had my old RioVolt SP90, boy that WAS a POS... good thing iRiver made the best CD players I had seen to date, but damnit iRiver, don't jump the shark on CD players yet! HDD players are nice, but the market is still huge for CD/MP3/etc. format players!

Gotta

That could have been entirely due to the QC2's. I think you would need other headphones to conduct a reliable test.

True! That's why I'd like to a/b my ety's versus the QC2 on their POS player.
