Nice looking mod. I agree with the blacking out the red headband part. As of right now, it sticks out like a sore ugly red headband.

I personally think the red band looks kinda whacky, but black would make them look too...solid I guess, something bright yellowish or greenish should be great. or NEON.

The process works like this, first they strip the metal part and clean it thoroughly, then they give it a slight charge which helps the powder stick to the part, then once it's sprayed with the selected color of powder it's put into an oven and baked. In the oven the powder turns to liquid form. Once it comes out of the oven and cools down it's much harder than paint, and bonds much better as well. So there is no chance of what you questioned.

I got to see these yesterday, and it also took me a min to figgure out why they didnt look as goofy as normal K1ks. When it hit me I was mighty impressed.

Powder Coating is extremely tough & durable and the least likely to flake off, the very reason many pro motor builder use powder coating for places that gets rough handling.

Another easy substitute and faster solution to powder coating is to use ACE Hardware Epoxy Paint - used them on my CMOYs and they are REALLY tough and resists scraping if the painting is layered properly

Yeah. The powder coating finish is really tough; it definitely strengthened the grillse themselves, which is a good part of the reason why they were harder to get back on; It also will prevent further denting in the future.

presumably the powdercoating slightly fills the holes of the grille. any change in sound? I'd expect probably not, but k1000 look so fragile to me, like anything could cause them to suffocate!

It's a pretty thin method of coating. It didn't fill up the holes, really, except in the very very corners where the wire is really really close together anyway, and those parts are already under the lip of the bracket, so it doesn't matter. No sonic changes whatsoever.

EDIT: By the way, if anyone wants to take their grilles off the K1000, get a philips #0 screwdriver. If you want ot take off the red bands on the top, the 1.5mm hex will do it perfectly.
