i used to ride a pretty nice bike, specialized hardrock comp. I got careless and locked it with a cheap cable lock of my friends when i stopped downtown to drop off some books at the library. came back not 10 minutes later and it was gone. my tip for preventing bike theft is never compromise, i thought locking it downtown in front of a government building for a few minutes would be safe, and it wasnt. Don't let a bike out of your site for a second, and the best way to prevent theft is just not to lock the bike.

as for locking methods, i went to the hardware store and bought 4 feet of 3200lb tensile strength steel chain. it took the hydraulic cutter in the hardware store 2 minutes of cranking before it finally gave, and when it did it sounded like a gunshot. i doubt anyone with bolt cutters could break it. multiple locks discourage theifs too, a ulock, chain lock and cable lock looks much harder to break into. leaving your bike really dirty is a nice preventative measure. i kept my bike shined every run making it eye candy for theifs.

#1. I do.
#2. Cross-country mountain (2000 Cannondale Jekyll 1000SL) set up for heavy trail and downhill
rolleyes.gif

#3. Because I like it.
#4. Not too often anymore, I've gotten out of shape, and my bike is woefully inadequate for the riding I do. One ride generally destroys half of the parts.
#5. Local trails.
#6. I don't keep track.

"Do you follow the sport of professional cycling? Who are your favourites?"
Not really. I like watching the "professionals" that fall off of cliffs, but I'd rather watch Degrassi reruns with my eyes stapled open than suffer through a televised road race.

"Do you upgrade your bike/bike parts like people here upgrade Hi-Fi gear?"
Give me money, and I'll answer that with an emphatic, "yes!"

"Do you ride at night, in the winter?"
Yes, and yes.

"Post your tips for night riding, winter riding."
For night riding, I'd think that most people here have enough intellegence to do it properly. Regarding winter riding, it's all about striking a balance and staying warm. Don't bundle too much, because you don't want to carry outerwear, but the consequences of not wearing enough are obvious. Also, deflate the tires a bit.

"Do you leave your bike unattended?"
Rarely.

"Have you ever had your bike stolen?"
Not really.

"Post any tips you have for preventing bike theft."
See how many parts you can incorporate into the locking process, if you use a cable lock.
