BICYCLING thread ...

When I worked in a bike shop, we sometimes had to cut locks off bikes when people lost their keys. Our favourite tool for the job was an angle grinder with a cutting wheel, it would go through any lock within a minute, even Kryptonite's New York Lock. Cable locks were defeated in seconds, cables are strong but not very hard. Fortunately cordless angle grinders are nowhere near as powerful as the 12 amp heavy-duty one we had in our shop.

Best way I've found to avoid theft is to ride a beater bike when you need to lock it somewhere and to keep the bike dirty looking. Don't wash it for a year, let it get all cruddy and scratched up, just keep the mechanicals in good shape and leave the cosmetics alone.

How many people out there ride a bike? I do
What [type of] bike(s) do you own? I believe that it is referred to as a Road Bike. A Bianchi Nuovo Record, Celeste Green , Columbus SL tubing .
Why do you ride? I love riding. I always wanted a Campy equipped lightweight. This one has full Nuovo Record excpet for the stem (Cinelli) and Bar (3T). Mavic rims and Clement 700C clinchers
How often do you ride? Almost every day
Where do you ride? To the train and from the train to work and back home.
How far do you ride? Less than 10 mi per day

What [type of] bike(s) do you own?
Canondale R800 Full 105

Why do you ride?
Just love the feeling of being out there on my bike while listenin' to music

How often do you ride?
Every chance I could get usually 1 or twice a week these days though

Where do you ride?
Most of the time around Port Colborne, and Fort Erie (ontario). It's mostly old train tracks turned into a paved trail. Or I just find some nice paved back roads.

How far do you ride?
Usually around 30-50KM depending on mood. I wanna get a century in before the season is over.

Do you leave your bike unattended?
Nope It only goes out when I ride, all the other times it stays in the basement

Have you ever had your bike stolen?
Yep had a raleigh MB taken from me. My sister and my cousin went out to the store to get something so she asked me if she could take my bike so I let her. When she came back my bike wasn't with her. It sucked but we got over it.

Where was it stolen, how was it locked up (cable, U-lock)?
Nope it was just put in front of the store

I have a Santa Cruz Heckler Super Light full suspension with front and rear discs. I used to ride 3 days a week off-road, and one day on road, and then I re-found my love for Hi-Fi. I only ride on weekends, and it is amazing, how much technical riding there is, within a 40 mile radius of NYC. I enjoy riding road, but it is dangerous in the 5 boros, and my back needs cush, so I use the mtb for the pavement.
Hence the moniker "Immtbiker".
The only place I lock up my bike, is on my pedestal rack in my bedroom, on top of my wife's Gary Fisher Joshua Z-1. I like it on top

i would assume lock picking requires a bit of skill.
A real theif would have to practice to pick lock quickly OR have lots of time to work on lock.
if you try this on your own lock, you may have to file off nib on proper key to re-lock lock [ie. make sure you have an extra key].

Diamondback Sorrento MTB.

My dream bike is a Trek, but the DB is good enough for now considering the extremely limited about of use it sees (most of it on the street). I'm hoping that will change as my kids (primary riding buddys) get older and can go longer distances. The area round Hot Springs has lots of trails, though unfortunately most of the better bike accessible ones are further out of town.

Any other "Clydesdale" riders?

I happen to own exactly the same locks that the original author of the post that started it all owns. Oops. And they're all more than two years old, which makes me elegible for a 'sizeable rebate' whatever that is.

Oh well, at least in the meanwhile I can use my current locks to beat the crap out of anyone attempting to steal my bikes.

The BRUTE line of Onguard locks looks interesting.
Anyone out there own one?
Does it have the tubular cylinder lock/BIC-pen problem?

Stage 15 of 21 has been completed.
there is a real tight race atop the general classification.

General classification after stage15:

1 Roberto Heras (Spa) Liberty Seguros 54.04.25
2 Alejandro Valverde (Spa) Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme 0.05
3 Santiago Perez (Spa) Phonak Hearing Systems 1.45
4 Francisco Mancebo (Spa) Illes Balears-Banesto 2.02
5 Isidro Nozal (Spa) Liberty Seguros 3.45
6 Carlos Sastre (Spa) Team CSC 6.12
7 Floyd Landis (USA) US Postal Service p/b Berry Floor 8.21
8 Manuel Beltran (Spa) US Postal Service p/b Berry Floor 8.44

Santiago Perez has won the last two stages and made up [on Heras] 1.51 today and 0.46 yesterday.
Perez is a climbing specialist. Mountainous Stage 20 and final stage 21 [time trial] should be very interesting.
