Beyerdynamic DT880 - Would you consider them Neutral?

The DT880 are the closer to neutral that i have heard in therm of headphones. They are brighter than say sennheiser sound and bassier than grado. But they do have a slight tendency to be more trebleish than bassy, but not that far from flat so i would call them neutral.

The K701 has a more neutral low end, so did the K340, the K1000, the DT931, HD595.

The bass on the DT880 is not for my taste neither in character nor in amount. So are many other headphone such as the HD580/600/650, the DT990, the A900's and a few more.

more? maybe if you test it for response. but the bass on the K701 is much more realistic and controlled. I've heard the K701 and the DT880 side by side many times. While the K701's only problem was sibilance and maybe a bit "soft" on rock recordings, the DT880 always had a "fat" lower end which reminded me of the things I hate in the HD580 bass, and the treble has a certain area which is just exaggerated. Again, that's my opinion, you may disagree.

Wow. Compared to the HD 600s, my DT 880s sounded downright thin. Can't imagine the K701s having even less.

not less, more controlled and realistic bass. The HD600 like the 580 have just too much bass. The DT880 unlike them has a bass which for me, for whatever reason it is, just can't be called neutral. However, "thin" is not a term I would use to describe the DT880

Hmm. I have thick, long-ish hair that covers my ears. Perhaps I'm not getting as good a seal with the 880s as you have and am perceiving thinner bass.

Well it seems that many don't consider the DT880 as neutral. If this is the case, which headphone would you consider?

How about impressions on the W5000??? My reference IEM are Etymotic, which I simply love the sound!!!

I thought the DT880 bass sounded a bit lite and made the spectrum shifted up due to the tipped up treble.

The DT880's are not neutral by any definition of the word. Nothing on the right side of the graph should ever be above anything to the left of it.

I would not call the DT880s neutral, although they're very likable. They are very sibilant headphones (at least in my opinion), but they are extremely lively. For a truly neutral headphone (and I know some will disagree) i'd go with the HD650s. I prefer them to any other headphone for referencing. I've compared them to the UE10s, K701s, DT770s 80 / 250, DT 880s, Proline 750, HFI 700, HD600, HD280, HD25, ER4, MDR 7509, MDR 7506, D5000, E530, Triple-fi Pro....I've yet to hear the XS-2 but theyre on their way.

Of all those mentioned I LOVE the HD650s.......some say they're not much different from the 600s but I think its a world of difference. HD600s are punchier and not as full, they suggest a little more highs (DT880s have even more highs but I don't think that's neutral), the 650s are a little more laid back but MUCH smoother and much more "musical"......I think the K701s are a bit thin, but very wide sounding.......I would say the K701s are the analytical equivalent of the more Musical HD650s.......very different sounding and will appeal to different listeners. I personally prefer the DT880s to the K701s, BUT again I will say to get HD650s even though you own the 600s

Learn from my mistake. I bought the W5000 last week........I nominate them for worst headphone I've ever heard at any price. They don't sound anything like the ER4. First of all, the ER4 have a fairly balanced sound. The absence of bass in the W5000 is awful. I'm not even a big bass head, but these had no bottom at all. NONE......to my ears, the roll off began around 120 hz and I couldn't hear anything below 50. The upper mids hurt my ears. I will get slaughtered on this site for saying this, but I honestly prefer the sound of the stock ipod ear buds to the audio technica W5000.........don't buy these!

Because I've ONLY heard that the K701 has more bass than the 880.

I feel the 701 is too neutral. It has great detail, but it is mellow. I compare the bass to the bass on the Omega 2's. Realistic but a little too laid back.

I wouldn't say that the 880's are neutral at all (although we are talking about 3 possible versions that sound different). The bass is manipulated a bit, but I like them better than the 600's.
