Are you perhaps turning it up louder because the Dekoni pads result in a reduction of the imaging capabilities of the headphone ? This would certainly cause someone to want to turn it up louder to attempt to hear some lost detail.

I'm thinking that I may still be acclimating to the pads. They sound better at lower volume now. I'm also using less EQ than before. Meh, I keep going back and forth....

Damn, I am just loving this headphone. I must have over 30 hours use on it now, as I have used it every night since I got it. My music genres are hard rock and heavy metal. This headphone is fantastic in the way it portrays energetic music. It just brings life to everything. This headphone offers something similar to a high quality speaker like experience in the way that it has such precise and articulate imaging capabilities. Everything that is present in the music is revealed. It refuses to let anything present in the recordings be left unnoticed. I suppose that some would say that this is a fault of this headphone, because horribly mastered music will sound like trash. I do not agree with this though. Indeed, terribly recorded material will sound rough, but the DT1990 is just showing you the garbage that is there. The headphone makes sure that the listener is given the entire music experience. I was listening to the new Darkwater - Human album tonight. It just sounds stunning on this headphone. I continue to be very impressed.

So true. Hard rock, heavy metal is just insane with this. However it's way too much ''alerting'' for casual listening especially with the balanced pads.

The DT-1990's are perfect for those genres. They excel at portraying the energy needed blast out complex riffs while providing excellent imaging. Nothing sounds congested and double bass drums have a nice thump to them. The DT-1990's are great headphones that I need to get back into my collection.

Did some tweaks to the EQ for the new pads, as i was kind of missing the signature sound of the DT-1990. Guess I got used to it.

20Hz-31-5Hz +4 dB
40Hz +3.5 dB
50Hz +2 dB
630Hz - 2000Hz +1 dB
3150Hz +0.5dB

Not much in the way of tweaks, but it does brighten up the sound, brings the mids forward a tad more, so it's more like the A-pads in presentation. Like I said before, you can use these pads w/o EQ, but you lose some subbass impact. Also, the velour is a damn small hair magnet. Presentation is still energetic, and I find myself still dancing in my chair.

(Just noticed we have a Beyerdynamic Smiley, and it even looks like the DT-1990!)

I am probably at 40 hours use on my DT1990 by now. The sound continues to advance and mature even further than it was at 30 hours use. The instrument detail, dynamics, and layering is even better than it was 10-12 hours ago. I remember my Amiron Home finally reached its final sound at 55-60 hours use. I would bet, since the DT1990 has the same drivers, that it will end up displaying the exact same phenomenon. In all honesty, I should have got this headphone sooner. Being a guy who only listens to hard rock and heavy metal music, I think I made a mistake not buying this headphone a couple years ago. It just attacks the music. Instead of the just the music showing you what is there, the headphone jumps right in front and says, "hey artist, you sit back and let me take the lead here". You can't help but to tap your foot and head to this headphone. It wants to be heard. I know I said this previously when I first got the headphone, but the way it images and displays instruments in the mix is just amazing. Every guitar that is present in the recording is layered and separated. Piano comes through with pristine clarity, and the decay on the notes is rendered with excellent realism. Any faults, clicks, pops, crackles, vibrations, coughs, or distortion that is present in a bad mix will totally be exposed on this headphone. Anyone who listens to heavy music needs to seriously put this on their purchase list.

I don't know if you are a gamer, but if you are and use the Dt1990 you will be able to hear every single sound with nearly perfect positioning. I hear people hiding in the grass in the Battlefield V if they make the slightest movement. Also connect them to the TV/AV receiver and you are in for a treat with movies. The voices are very clear, the soundstage is great, separation, etc.

Yes, I play games as well. I was playing Battlefield 1 a couple nights ago. It is very easy to detect where every footstep is coming from. In Killing Floor 2, it was the same experience when the monsters were making noise. I still don't own Battlefield 5 yet.

After 40 or so hours use, this is the final EQ I have made for this headphone as well. It makes it sound completely balanced. Soundstage width and depth with this EQ improves though, as a result of the mid bass reduction.

EQ to use with Balanced Pads:

Pre-Amplifier: - 2

31.5: + 0.5
160Hz: - 0.5
200Hz: - 1
250Hz: - 1
315Hz: - 1
400Hz: - 1
500Hz: - 0.5
800Hz: + 0.5
1kHz: + 0.5
1.25kHz: + 0.5
3.15kHz: + 0.5
4kHz: + 0.5
6.3kHz: - 1.0
8kHz: - 1.5
10kHz: - 1
12.5kHz: - 0.8

Brainwavz currently has a 30% off sale, as well as free shipping worldwide. Does anyone else want to dive in and try a pair of the velour round pads ? I received an email yesterday from them, and they said that the standard sized velour rounds at the link fit the DT1990 just fine. The XL version also fits the headphone, but they will hang over the side. I am considering getting a pair of the standard size ones to test them out on my 1990.

Edit: Alright, I just could not resist. I just bought a pair of them. Once they get here, I will put up my impressions of the sound differences.
