Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO - Beyer's open-back mastering headphone

So the Sony is probably hopelessly overwhelmed here. I wouldn't bash the headphones here, but rather look for the cause in the player.

Tone is hard to read on the Internet, but to be clear I'm not bashing the headphones. Everything I'm posting is just first impressions and quirks/problems that other people here might have encountered as well. It takes time to really get to know a headphone and decide whether I'll end up liking it as one of my primary headphones or if it'll be a more situational thing. I listened using the DT 1990s for 4-6 hours yesterday and I wouldn't do that with a headphone I don't like on some level. The nits I've picked have all been mechanical (fit, pad attachment mechanism, buzzing/rattling).

I do have significantly more powerful amps that I've used it with: Chord Mojo 2, iFi Zen CAN, NITSCH Magni Piety, Schiit Magni+, etc. and so far the iFi is my favorite. The higher gain mode for high-impedance headphones on the new MacBook Pros is also surprisingly good sounding and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the DT 1990 to someone who was going to be using it directly off that.

Where did he say he doesn't like it? I read that he had a buzzing sound in one earcup. Clearly something was wrong. I would have returned them for exchange instead of trying to repair.

I took off the foam disc and looked for hair, and I tapped on the earcup a few times while it was buzzing. I'd call that "troubleshooting" not "repair"! If the problem reoccurs they'll definitely be sent back in for exchange.

I tried the dt 1990 pro, … I tuned it to -1db octave tilt diffuse field (the orange line). Blue was original. I use audio hijack for that. I think headphones will enough, I will ditch speakers idea in the small room. Only the Kali in 5 in the living room. Best headphone performance for my liking, I’ve never heard something like that. Wow 😯 it’s like god was involved in this smart decision. It was the last, of the last try.

To all of you, I see a lot of you on headfi selling their dt 1990 pro, don’t do it, just try this out beforehand, and then judge 😉

Amp is L70. Dac is e70 velvet, … for me that makes it the worlds best headphone

Any reason why you use balanced pads if you use EQ anyway?

Interesting Filterset - I test the “Beyerdynamic DT 1990 (balanced earpads) ParametricEQ“ from Oratory1990 - I could that in Media Center 31 use in “Faltung“ (convolution).
I will create a textfile with your settings and use then in Media Center 31 in “Faltung“ (convolution) too.

If I done right - your filter
Code:
Preamp: -3.9 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 120 Hz Gain -4.0 dB Q 0.30
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 280 Hz Gain -2.1 dB Q 1.00
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 890 Hz Gain 1.4 dB Q 0.20

QQ re DT1990 - i have DT880pro(600ohm) and DT900 prox - love them both especially the latter (unpopular opinion but they are great)

Should I dump them both for DT1990? I mean, I do have way too many cans. I can make a case for keeping the 2 (or even all 3!) but curious what others think

What aspects are you looking to improve? Are you looking a for a better sounding Beyerdynamic, or are you looking for the best sound possible in your budget?

As far as I have learnt and read here (actually didn't use any other beyer except for one model in the 80s and one in the mid 90s, 1990s of course), you can dump any beyer for the DT1990s, am I not right? Especially if you have already too much cans. With the exception that you might need a closed can.

I'll be receiving my 1990s on Tuesday. Wondering what a good planar companion might be? Overall I want great soundstage, imaging and detail. The aryas were great and I might just grab them again

I'm also reading that the Amiron home are quite nice. Warmer but bigger stage. Maybe pair those with the 1990s? Or one of the T1 variants?

What is the budget?
Audeze LCD-X can surprise you.
Arya is a good choice, Arya organic better.
The clamp can be battled overtime with headstands force.
Another option could be HE1000se maybe 2nd hand.
HE560 also have nice soundstage
Audeze lcd-2 also in same range Id say

Good luck 🤞

Hifiman Edition XS with balanced cables?

I found with my DT1990's that a hybrid tube amp (mine is a TA-20) just "relaxes" them a bit. The highs aren't quite as sharp, female vocals warm up a bit (Melody Gardot - Some Lessons for example). My audio vocabulary isn't as expansive as others but the best I could describe using them with tubes as taking a deep breath, letting it out and relaxing.
My 2c.
