No - Beyer has two lines of equipment - consumer and professional and it keeps these lines quite distinct. The DT1990 Pro is the flagship of the professional line. The T1 will remain the flagship of the consumer line.

My impressions of this product are:
1. It's an opened version of DT1770 Pro, there will be a semi-opened DT1880 next year, this is just a marketing strategy. There aren't too much technological advances, the drivers are almost the same. 
2. The drivers are nearly the same as T90, with 2nd gen Tesla. 
3. Travel case, exchangeable ear-pads actually take a large part of the total costs. It may not be clearly better than the DT990s.
4. Don't think this can beat the T1, would call it a black T90 or a "you can now change the wire and the ear-pads" T90.

I doubt that there will ever be a DT1880, just like there never was a T80. The thing is, the new open ones (T90 and DT1990) are voiced to be even across the frequency range, like the DT880, not like the DT990 with a "fun" sound signature. Because of this, there is no need for a semi-open model, unless it would be tuned like a DT990, which would be weird. Although, then again, the T70 exists, and it's nothing like its closed Beyer brothers.
 
I'd like to see the DT1990 compared to the Koss ESP-950. That might be interesting, not that it would ever happen. People who own/review electrostats never compare them to anything other than other electrostats. It's really annoying for those of us who just want to know how one pair of headphones compares to its competitors, instead of how it compares to a SR-009 with a 10K amp and DAC.
 
One other thing I noticed is that T90 prices have plummeted recently, and it might be related the the release and anticipation of the DT1990.

T90 is a treble monster, one of the most fun headphones, in my opinion.  DT990 sounds like a lesser imitation of T90.

DT990 sounds nothing like the T90. If anything, T90 and Dt1990 sound more akin, reasonably enough. The most marked difference to me when I did a hasty comparison at canjam london, was the added body to the notes on the dt1990, not from added bass but just more present mids. The T90 was airer sounding and also more comfortable because the earpads are deeper, the Dt1990 is more or less like the older DT models on this regard, which is a shame.

Remember the DT1990 pro is a professional product. The professionals have totally different requirements than the average HeadFi member. They obviously need more rugged devices than comfy sofa like T1/5/70/90 are. So no, it's not a shame, it's on purpose.
