From experience, which of these headphones would be better suited to more metallic, chaotic music. Extreme bass not required, but I'd like something punchy. Also, are they extremely power hungry? Help a n00b make the jump to some good cans. I'm open to recs.

I'd go with the DT770 Edition 2005. I think they sound better than either the DT770 Pro/80 or the K271S. They are probably the most power hungry of all of these, though.

They both are power hungry, yes, that means you need an amp for either of those. Overall K271S takes my voice, but many would prefer DT770 for metal, as they are more exciting and have more bite. K271S are mellower and easier on ears in a long term, DT770 treble, on the other hand, hurts after a while.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that it's 2005 250Ohm edition of DT770.

I am a fan of Power Metal/Symphonic/Epic etc.The DT770 does need an amp but even a small CMOY will do. The DT770/80 that I am using sounds great with metal. I haven't heard the 271's but I am very happy with the DT770

My vote goes to the DT770 2005 consumer edition as well.
But you could also consider the DT150. They are balanced with a good punch. In my opinion they beat the K271 and DT770 (and a lot of other cans

The k271 were one of the first 'phones I sold in the early portion of my headphone hegira.............and never missed them at all. Ditto Denon IMO. I really don't see either of them as recommendable. The only AKG I own today are k340 modded - all else are Beyer mods, and both Grado RS-1 and Joe grado HP-2.

My problem with DT770 is that mids are on a recessed side and in order to give them some bloom I have to raise the volume, but that makes highs unbearable. I have noticed that after a couple of days with DT770 my ears started ringing, switched back to K271S and everything went back to normal. I also think K271S is more even across the board, without severe ups and downs, and much smoother. The disadvantage is lesser comfort, esp with stock pleather and more collapsed soundstage. They do provide much better isolation though.

I honestly haven't noticed the DT770 Edition 2005's mids being recessed. In contrast with the well known midrange hump of the K271S, sure, they sound flatter. Plus most of the more recent music from audio CDs is bumped up in the midrange, so accentuating this with headphones isn't necessarily a good thing. Unless you're using Grados

(but even then, I don't think it's so much that there's a huge midrange hump as it is that they simply have great mids at nothing else's expense).

It might be recession relative to the other phones I use. It's not severe but switching from K271S and Audio-Technica makes you miss something in the midrange. Some prolonged listening takes care of that as human hearing is a natural equalizer. They are great phones, it's just for me K271S is easier on ears for day long listening marathon.
