I think there's an alternative to the velour pads. I have leather on the Strawberry Donuts that I'm trying to get rid of (the leather, not the cans) so I got some of the new gel pads from Beyer; the look to be essentially the same dimensions as my leather earpads, which, in turn look about identical to SkyLabs'. The gels are very nearly as soft as the leathers, and should provide at least the same stand-off as the leather pads.

Unfortunately, the existing pads are superglued to the frames, so I'm going to have to wait until I get home next month to swap the pads out. I won't be able to provide a real world comparison until then.

Just for what it's worth, I hated the Gel pads. The look, the feel, and the sound. Of course, YMMV.
