Dont buy a "computer" speaker system. Get an amplifier and some nice bookshelves (like klipsch). And you should get your amp from 41hz.com... those amps are amazing! You have to build it though.

Within your price range I think it's hard to do better than the active powered monitors M-Audio BX5a (non-deluxe), at B&H Photo for $150 a pair. Some of the speakers recommended so far are priced at $200 EACH, so beware if they're a set or individual. I don't know the Alesis M1s, but they look interesting also.

obob -- thanks for those links... I needed an inexpensive 2.1 set for my daughter's new Macbook Pro (surprise... don't tell her

) that would also accept an input for her ipod Touch... the Altec Lansing VS2421 you linked to above is perfect for that and only $38 shipped.... thanks
