Best under $80?
Jul 10, 2007 at 1:40 PM Post #31 of 48
Hm. Well, if I'm trying to get the best out of my music, do I really want a completely neutral sound? I would prefer my music to sound good rather than perfect. If that makes any sense... That in consideration, what mentioned in post 24, (+ the eH350s and the RP-21s) would do that best?

Thanks again for all your help!

Senn HD485, for about $70 they are a great headphone. I also like the AT A500.

Any detail on what kind of music will the HD485 excel in?

If you're a

, you'll enjoy the 485s.

I had a pair of SR-60s that I still miss. Unbeatable at the price, in my opinion.

At a lower price point, I've always been a big fan of the PortaPros. Really stunning for only $39, collapsible for travel, and quite rugged. And they come with a lifetime guarantee. My choice for everyday portable use.

No they are nothing like the DT770's, those are
basshead.gif

the HD485 are interesting, if the 595's and DT770 had a baby, this would perhaps resemble a HD485. They don't really sound like the 595 or 580, but they do have a wonderful detailed bass somewhat senn veil sound to them. They are surprisingly good for a $70 can. Probably not as good as say a 595, but at less then 1/2 the price they are certainly not 1/2 the HP the 595's are. I feel they are on par or slightly better then the 555's.

I would caution against the EH350 unless you have a chance to try them. Semi-circumaural cans are not for everyone. I liked HD485 more. Not imo..

The reasons why I personally chose the 350s over the 485s?

- wanted detail. was afraid that the 485s had enough
basshead.gif
bass to overwhelm details.
- read that the 485s had recessed midrange. personally want vocals to be in the forefront of music.
- was also told the 485s were slightly veiled.

Could you give us reasons why you think the 85s are better than the 350s? Very interested in this as my sub-$100 choices were over these 2 specific cans.

Well, after A LOT of reading... I think I'm pretty much sold on the AD700s.

Any last words to try and change my mind?

And thanks again for all your help. You guys have been great.

You sure you don't want the AD900s instead?

Seriously. You'll love those purple guys. Let us know how that works out for you.

The Sennheiser HD485 is not a basshead can, though I was still unimpressed with it's sound quality. The sound has decent bass, highs, and detail, but you also get a sucked out midrange which leaves your music feeling hollow, or if it is coming through a door.

After the first reason - that I don't care for the fit and comfort of semi-circumaural cans, the hd485s had more clarity and bass. I actually thought the EH350 sounded slightly veiled by comparison.

I agree it's not a basshead can. If you try it on different sources such as home receivers you may even find you would like slightly more bass. However I disagree about the recessed midrange. My impressions were it is above average. Usually if it would have a recessed midrange the highs and lows would be pronounced which is not the case.
